SNAKE!!!!

This little guy got croaked by a car in front of my house. Any one know what breed it is(was), the blue on the side of his head is the brightest blue i ever saw, never saw a snake with this color on it.

That sure do look like the common garter snake.

I thought so too, but never seen one this blue on the sides of his head and not on the body.

I see a blue faced one every time I cut the grass. Wife named him Spike.

 

I try to walk around a while til he goes back in his hole. He usually looks up at me and says thanks for the warning.

garter snake... he eats bugs and mice...scare the crap out of you but harmless....

Funny story...

A few years ago when my Granddaughter was 4 my Grandson, Granddaughter and I walked down to their pond to feed the fish some bread. Well one thing lead to another and she goes in and that 2 seconds that seems to last 5 minutes waiting for her to popup passes I jump in cell phone and all come to find out 2 ft from the shore it's 10 ft deep. Well I help her out shes crying more scared than anything and we head back to inform Mom that she fell in. So on the walk back to the house a snake comes slithering by and I reached down to pick it up. Well while holding it my Granddaughter, who likes snakes, starts petting it on the head and the snake pulls back and I tell her not to do that he may bite you. Hey what does Papa know it's a small snake and they don't bite..... Well after the 3rd or so attempt the snake strikes her on the finger and it's mouth just slides off no harm to her. Well the look on her face was priceless going from me to the snake to me to the snake and she says "Papa we can let the snake go now".

50+ years ago, my sister had one as a pet. Scared to death of spiders but loved that snake. Go figure.

It's either a cobra, a rattlesnake, a water moccasin, or a coral snake, , , ,that all the snakes there are and they are interchangeable, , , the cobra does not make noise and kills you, , ,the rattlesnake makes noise and kills you, the water moccasin swims and kills you, , the coral snake just kills you, , ,

They can change places and types but they will ALL kill you, , , , , or make you kill yourself getting away, , , , ,

Yea unfortunately, growing up here in western central parts of Fla as a kid and then moving to Oklahoma, my general education on snakes is DEAD. I think every poisonous snake alive in the US lives in Fla, and now we got a big problem with snakes that don't even belong on this continent, Pythons and Anacondas dumb a$$ thought would be a good pet. Really??

Oklahoma, only snakes I ever saw out there were either diamond back rattlers, Water Moccasins a couple sidewinders, everything deadly. Creepy slimy things, sort of like lawyers.

Guess I am fortunate. The area I am in east central Illinois there just aren't any poisonous ones. Our in my 53 years I've managed to avoid them. Now if I go 50 miles southeast there are rattlers and copperheads. I've seen some huge copperhead down around Bloomington, Indiana. But here hog nose, garter and black snakes are it. I see a 3 foot hog nose in the yard once in a while and leave it be. Good mouser. My wife doesn't like my not kling it but she just have to get over it

Around here they are called Blue Racers, a sub-species of the common garter snake. Good to have around, but not in that condition .

First one I ever saw that was blue like that. Most all the others I have seen are green with the white stripe. When i dug the hole for my antenna I disturbed a nest of snakes, I relocated them didn't kill a single one. I put them in a groundhog hole and covered the entrance with dirt. I understand snakes and groundhogs are enemies and since there were 5 times as many snakes I was hoping they'd run the Ghog off

Bob I think they call that natural selection or something. Thats the problem we have down here with these exotic snakes these jacka$$ have had as pets and decided are to much of a pain to feed now, or they escaped way back during hurricane Andrew in Miami. They just caught one yesterday in a neighborhood over Tampa way 12 foot long killing neighborhood pets. they have no enemies here in Fla because they aint from around here.
