Bodaggit23 Posted August 5, 2014 #1 Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) Approached a car stopped in an intersection waiting to turn left, I passed on the right and they suddenly decided to turn right...into me and my 12 year old son... Yes, it is legal in my state to pass a vehicle that is waiting to turn providing there is enough room for the vehicle to safely do so. I was found not at fault. Luckily we both still have our left legs...no one got hurt thank God. I rode my Suzuki for over 15 years, never got a scratch on it... I've had this for 3 months and wtf....... http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184223_602_zps361f4bc6.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184231_839_zps7ff77734.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184238_402_zpsf8f038f7.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184243_782_zpsb9257c65.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184251_360_zps879ddd58.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184348_869_zpsdb69b5c0.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184512_573_zps8c1978d1.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184524_944_zpsac71066f.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184543_907_zpse98a8fbf.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184603_513_zpsdde8a010.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184642_753_zpsef74859b.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140804_184713_219_zpsa947aba9.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140809_113054_544_zpsada20d79.jpg Edited August 14, 2014 by Bodaggit23

Bodaggit23 Posted August 5, 2014 Author #5 Posted August 5, 2014 Save all those little pieces. It can be fixed. Glad you are able to post about it!!Insurance?? I have full coverage, no clue what happens now. 26 years driving and never had an accident until this.
ragtop69gs Posted August 5, 2014 #6 Posted August 5, 2014 Bikes are easier to fix than body parts Glad the two of you are ok.
Bodaggit23 Posted August 5, 2014 Author #7 Posted August 5, 2014 Bikes are easier to fix than body parts Glad the two of you are ok. That's true. But it seems like body parts are easier to find. I know that's a horrible joke but seriously, I just went through all this fixing my fender, which isn't even done yet, now I have to find a footrest and the chrome crash bar...not to mention a new bag, which I'll probably never find...have to settle for repair. IF they even give me the option? They might total it? I have no clue... What are they going to tell me it's worth I wonder?
XV1100SE Posted August 5, 2014 #8 Posted August 5, 2014 Glad you and your son are okay. Bike can be repaired.
Flyinfool Posted August 5, 2014 #9 Posted August 5, 2014 That is always my biggest fear with a passenger, especially a young family member. I am very glad you both are OK. Maybe you need to get everything repainted blaze orange .......
Bodaggit23 Posted August 5, 2014 Author #10 Posted August 5, 2014 Maybe you need to get everything repainted blaze orange ....... I'm beginning to wonder...
jonesy Posted August 5, 2014 #12 Posted August 5, 2014 painting it orange don't work, my venture trike was orange and someone hit it first day on road, just marked the fender but said he didn't see it.
MikeWa Posted August 5, 2014 #13 Posted August 5, 2014 Glad you and your son came through ok. It sure could have been a lot worse than just a bike. Mike
Bodaggit23 Posted August 5, 2014 Author #14 Posted August 5, 2014 The other persons insurance or yours? What are you asking exactly? Is their insurance going to pay for it? I certainly hope so. Glad you and your son came through ok. It sure could have been a lot worse than just a bike. Amen
Bodaggit23 Posted August 6, 2014 Author #15 Posted August 6, 2014 Anyone know why the parts schematic for 1997 Tour Deluxe doesn't include the rear floorboards? The 1996 shows regular pegs (Tour Classic), 1997 nothing for rear, 1998-2001 show floorboards. I know it's not a big deal, the floorboards from 1998-2001 will work, just curious why they're not included for 1997. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/PartsSchematicFloorboards_zps113892bc.jpg
billmac Posted August 6, 2014 #16 Posted August 6, 2014 Glad your both ok. Can find most of the parts on e-bay and pinwall salvage. If the insurance says your bag is only worth xx amount but really it's xxxx tell them to get you the bag painted to match the bike and you'll install it for free saving them the cost. I know it's the adjuster that come out but if they don't ride they seem to low ball you on the price. Do the math from dealer replacement parts to help argue your case for repair.
Bodaggit23 Posted August 7, 2014 Author #17 Posted August 7, 2014 Glad your both ok. Can find most of the parts on e-bay and pinwall salvage. I find zero left hand hard bag for 1997-1998 Royal Star, or the chrome Guard that goes in front of it. so far only the footrest can be found available and it's not even for my year of bike... Nobody around here does body work on cycles...everyone just prices new parts and puts them on. I do have the one guy that's going to paint my fender but he thinks they should pay to replace everything including mounting hardware and brackets. Dealer agreed...My broken bag will never be the same... Problem is, I can't get new parts for everything... So I'll get a list of parts and prices from the dealer that cannot be purchased and see what happens I guess.
Bodaggit23 Posted August 14, 2014 Author #18 Posted August 14, 2014 More good news...it's not just the bag, chrome bar, and passenger floorboard... The whole hard bag mounting subframe is tweaked to the right....who knows what else is bent/cracked/broken. The exhaust is also dented in two places, and somewhat looser than the other side...*sigh* Taking it to Yamaha tomorrow for a parts list. I have to get a monetary amount it would cost to replace each part even if the parts are no longer available...lol http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/BagsShifted_zpsc870db8e.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140809_113312_781_zpsa51a9b3c.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/AccidentReport_zpsf889d696.jpg
Guest tx2sturgis Posted August 14, 2014 #19 Posted August 14, 2014 Sure glad your ok and on here to gripe about it! The alternative is much worse! Just for some point of reference: Its not hard to do $5000 worth of damage to these bikes just by being hit and knocked down at 25mph. It will nickle and dime you pretty fast: An estimate at a Yamaha dealership will scare you when the total is figured up. You may find that repairs will exceed the market value by a large amount....so be prepared to accept the bike as totaled...and if that happens you might be able to buy it back as salvage and rebuild it. Or just let it go and find another bike.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted August 14, 2014 #20 Posted August 14, 2014 (edited) I have full coverage, no clue what happens now. What happens is you submit a claim to your insurance company since you have full coverage, and let them subrogate the damages with the other party's insurance company. (If you had liability only it gets very interesting as you would probably deal with the other partys insurance company directly) Either way, you need a good, overall, complete, estimate of the damage. Or just let it go and find another bike. I know the quote is going to be high, plus most of the parts won't be available. I just would like enough to get a newer set of bags (1999) with hinges and get them painted and get a floorboard really. Keeping the bike is not optional and I want no other bike. I inherited this motorcycle in May when my father passed away. It's going nowhere. I'm dropping it off at Yamaha tomorrow for full parts and labor quote, even though the parts can't be bought. As you said, I need a dollar amount put on the damage and that's the only way to get it really. I am dealing directly with their insurance company as of now because I don't really want to spend $500 of my money to fix something I didn't cause. Unless I have to... My insurance company said if they give me any hassle I'll have to go that route.
Bodaggit23 Posted August 20, 2014 Author #22 Posted August 20, 2014 $4700 with labor. It books at about $4000 Even better news, the other guys insurance company denied the claim. Says I passed illegally, therefore their moron client can do whatever they wish I guess. The cop stated, and the North Dakota Century Code also states that it's lawful to do so on such a road. Page 5 here, section 39-10-12 if anyone wants to prove me wrong. http://www.legis.nd.gov/cencode/t39c10.pdf?20140819174405 Have to see what my insurance company says I guess, I have full coverage after all. What douches......
Bodaggit23 Posted September 4, 2014 Author #23 Posted September 4, 2014 Well, they totaled it... Actual cash value = $3500 Minus $500 deductible Minus $1000 salvage value Leaves $2000 to fix it. Works for me. Bought newer, upgraded hinged bags and lower profile bag guards, bought a used footrest and $300 worth of paint for the new bags, and the new fender. (from the "boss" incident weeks before) I dropped the bags and fender off yesterday, got the paint today. By the time I dropped the paint off they already had the bags stripped and primed. Can't wait! http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140903_142727_242B_zps6d376aa9.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140903_143257_721_zps6e76af0e.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140903_143012_785_zpse9af48b8.jpg
Barrycuda Posted September 4, 2014 #24 Posted September 4, 2014 Bikes are easier to fix than body parts Glad the two of you are ok. Amen to that. Glad ya safe
Bodaggit23 Posted September 7, 2014 Author #25 Posted September 7, 2014 So...expensive lesson learned for me... If you spend $300 on paint for the restoration of one of your most sentimentally valued possessions.....open the can and CHECK THE COLOR before you drop it off at the body shop... I ordered the paint, trusted it was correct, dropped it off at the body shop and he did the same, trusted it was correct, and commenced shooting paint. I can't blame him for not spotting it sooner, he's working on 4 other projects at the same time, and expediting my bike to boot. He got all three parts painted before he realized it was wrong... I can only blame myself. Anyway, he mixed up his own batch quick and was on his merry way the same day, but it was week end and I have to wait till Monday to see anything. This is the bottom of the bag, supposed to be "ceramic ivory", compared to the fender. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140905_114240_752_zps1cb3ffca.jpg He put a splotch on the junk fender just to show the contrast. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/Bodaggit23/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Tour%20Deluxe/Accident%208-4-14/IMG_20140905_114230_522_zpsef379b8e.jpg
