I keep hearing of Mobile 1. Is this a special motorcycle oil or is it just the automotive oil? I thought you wasn't susposed to use synthetic automotive oil in a bike.

They do make a special motorcycle oil. I've been using it in my RSV since 1999. I won't use anything else but others here have favorites also. You can find it at SOME Walmarts. I get mine at Autozone. Not cheap...about $8.00 per quart.

I use the motorcycle Mobil 1, but any auto oil that does NOT have the words "Energy Conserving" in the API circle is OK..

Bucky,

Before you can get an answer to whether a "H" basket will work, you need to know what basket is in the bike. To do this the basket must be pulled to where you can get a look at the backside of the gear. The alpha code is hand etched there. If you have a "F" or "G" basket, then a "H" basket will probably work just fine. In most of the cases I have seen that a "I" basket was necessary was when the bike already had a "H" basket in it.

And a first gen basket will work just fine as long as you go up at least one character. This whine issue has been around since 1983 but has only become such an issue with the emergence of on-line owners groups. Back then we thought that it was just the way it was supposed to be. And if we heard any strange noises, we just turned up the volume on the radio.

I agree with Kit,

I was talking to my yamaha dealer mechanic, and asked him about changing the oil in the rear end due to a whine I was hearing. He kinda shruged hid head down and then proceeded to tell me how the gears worked. He told me everything Kit just said but added this piece of info. He asked "does your raidio work?" I said "Well yea!" he said with a smile on his face "well then turn it up!":rotf:

I guess Im lucky, the whine isnt that bad at all, it comes and goes.

About that Oil..............Oil is oil......there are more rumors and discussions about oil than anything else in the motorcycle areas of interest. Everyone has an opinion......the bottom line is everyone is right......it makes not one bit of difference so long as you change your oil on a regular basis.....whether you use dino, or synthetic....or most likely you could use Wesson cooking oil.......I went the oil route......trying to solve the gear whine......tried everything known to mankind.......it does not work.......the heavy oils like 20w50 will muffle the noise while the bike is cold.....get it out on the interstate and get her warmed up.....it is just like the other ones.

I do like to take care of my toys.......so I use the absolutely best oil I can obtain.....even though it most likely does not make any difference.....so I use some kind of quality synthetic, such as mobile one......amsoil.......or something like that......and I do avoid the lower viscosity oils that say or have the energy conserving label on them........they have moly in the oils....and will cause the clutch to start slipping......for sure.......know all about this one!! That part is not rumor.......it is fact!!

Anyways oil is oil.......it is all the same.....most of it is out of the same barrel....just has a different color dye in it......and a different label..........you can blend it.....whip it....add Lucas......thin it with kerosene......add Marvel Mystery oil......and the Mystery will continue and so will the Whine.:bighug:

Changing oil to a good synthetic does not always work, it did not work for Kit.. It has worked for some,, try it before you discount it,, It is a lot cheaper and less hassle than changing a basket.

Thanks for the Oil Different Wgt. Info.

My 1st gen has always had some whine, especially when Decellerating. However I never considered it a problem. Just the way this beast runs.

Another item, would be on long trips, use ear plugs. I have expeirimented with these on the Busa, with Full face helmet. Lots of Wind noise on that bike. ( ie. no windshield ) I was trying to cut down on the wind noise. The ear plugs really work for that. And do not seem to effect the music thru the helmet mounted ear phones. But makes a big different on the high frequency wind noise.

As to clutch slippage. Since I put the Barnett Unit in, at around 30K, I have not been able to get it to slip, no matter what I do, or what oil I use.

So, has anyone compared the various 'baskets'? I mean race car mechanics have been shaving gears for decades. I'm certainly no machinist. Heck I can't even spell it (thank God for spell-check). I'm little more than a shade-tree mechanic who's willing to wrench on anything so long as I have some instructions and the ability to replace it (i.e. can afford to replace it). My local yamma dealer (we'll just call him Satin for now) will be glad to sell me an "H" basket for $215 USD because that's what the Yamma parts catalog has in it. I haven't torn in to mine yet to see which one I have, but I was thinking about running my current basket down to to a machine shop and having them shave a little off each of the teeth. I figure if I'm gonna plunk 2 bones on another basket anyway it's worth trying make this one go first. I was just wondering if anyone else has already tried this. I'm also wondering if perhaps I'm going the wrong way? Perhaps the teeth need to be thicker?

For the record, I just picked up a 99 RSV about 200 loud, whiny, brutally annoying miles ago. I've owned Hondas that have their own annoying sounds (ever heard of the "honda tick?") but this is just BRUTAL. It's actually louder than my radio will go (without blowing the speakers) at 2500rpm in second!!! I love this RSV, it rides like a dream but with this whine I don't even need a gremlin bell! The whine will drive the gremlins crazy and make them fall off!

Any thoughts on machining?

thx!

thanks Freebird. Unfortunately I read your post about 30 seconds too late... but I hadn't even thought about picking up a used one. I think I'll do that.

thanks!

Well!! Thanks all of you for posting.. I FINALLY got my bike back!! aaannnddd The VERDICT IS!!!!..............................

Patience..

Patience..

Ok so it probably resolved approximately 70% of the noise.. It also seemed to change the tone to a lower note. So at this point it is completely tolerable! I am glad for all of the information provided by you awesome folks here. Thank you so much! I can't imagine what I would have done had I not found this site. SO KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU!

Also, Just incase the basket didn't help me.. I purchased a fairing with stero from Hoppe Industries. The thought was that I would cover up that dang whine with a 200 watt stereo. So I love this thing. I did however not get a good clean fit for the fairing, and it was awesome to work with Hoppe as they are building me a new fairing and I am meeting them in Myrtle Beach at the spring rally. They will work out the kinks and do what is needed to resolve my problem. Was very refreshing to work with Hoppe after my dragging experience at the Yamaha Dealer.

Just out of curiosity. Anyone headed to the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally this spring? May 9-18th. If so, let me know we can try and hook up!

Again, THANKS A MILLION TO ALL OF YOU!

So did you ever find out which basket you actually had originally? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did all this cost (or was it covered under warranty? I've forgotten...)

I've had my TD since 03 and never been able to figure this out...

Please someone tell me what works. For a while I thought it was the pipes now I see the clutch. Is the fix the same for the 97. Any 96-97 owners have this problem?

My bike developed a medium loud whine (loud enough to be annoying at 70mph) around the time the first oil change was due. I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic and it made a big difference I hardly noticed it anymore.. Again last week, about 500 miles before an oil change was due the whine started getting louder, but not really that bad, I went ahead and changed my oil early, again with Mobil 1 and it quieted back down.

Now - that's just what we need.

An audible oil change warning noise.

Sure beats putting a sticker on your screen!
