turtle Posted July 21, 2014 #1 Posted July 21, 2014 I have a 1981 Goldwing that the valve stem broke on rear wheel can I break the bead on the rear rim and replace it with out taking wheel off. If so how I seen where Puc said something about using c-clamps . Do you put pieces of wood to protect the tire? I think I included pictures of my stable. Blond 83 Venture Royal, Blue 83 Venture, and the 81 Goldwing I made my own Voyager kit for the wife.

I would think if you get the training wheels up off the ground to suspend the rear tire you could break the bead on the rear tire enough to replace the stem... Not a big deal if you can get the bead to clear the center line of the rim. Deep clamps should work. Also some protection more for the rim than the tire....
Peder_y2k Posted July 21, 2014 #3 Posted July 21, 2014 I've used a C clamp to break the bead of motorcycle tires like Puc has. Need a clamp with large enough 'throat' to permit the pads to fit as close to the rim as possible. I used metal bars under the clamp pads to spread the stress area, and moved them around to better fit as the work progressed. Lubricating the bead contact area as it becomes exposed helps. Also helps to lube the clamp threads. In the 'field' like Puc, one can use spit, urine, coffee, toothpaste.... or whatever for the lube. BTW..... where are the fenders for the outrigger wheels? Fenders are required by law here. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
turtle Posted July 21, 2014 Author #4 Posted July 21, 2014 Had not installed them yet in the picture I posted. Picked some up at local Farm supply store in trailer section. also installed original bags and trunk . I can remove and go back to two wheels by removing 6 bolts and 3 wire connectors. I have about $700 into it has enabled my wife to ride until recently when she hurt her neck. Thanks for the advise.
MiCarl Posted July 21, 2014 #5 Posted July 21, 2014 One problem you might have (I've done two in the last couple weeks) is with it broken off there is nothing to grab to pull the valve through. You'll likely have to pull them through the tire side of the wheel. After the bead is broken you should be able to cut enough rubber away (from the axle side) that the remnant falls into your hand.
turtle Posted July 22, 2014 Author #6 Posted July 22, 2014 Just want to thank all who responded to my post yesterday used 3 c-clamps and in less than 15 minutes had it changed. Best 12 dollars any one can spend. THANKS:stickinouttounge:
