djh3 Posted July 18, 2014 #1 Posted July 18, 2014 Working on an 07 and pulled the air filters out. It has some fancy chrome covers on it. the filters are pretty bad so I was going to change them out. I had the filters out of my 09 which are decent as I switched to K&N on mine. I figured I save him a few bucks. Went to put my filters in and cover wont go on. My OEM filters have a raised center on them and his are flat. I checked the K&N and they are flat also. Whats the deal? My 09 is on left.

Whats the deal? My 09 is on left. The only way the billet air filters covers will fit is with the K&N's. You can put the OEM covers back on and use most aftermarket filters. If you decide to do that I'd be interested in buying those terrible looking billet covers from you..... I also have a set of OEM covers with a little bling on them. I can send pics if you decide to go that direction. That said you can clean the K&N's and they do have a lifetime warrantee...

I was just wondering why his OEM looking paper filters (on right) didn't have the raised top like the OEM out of my 09. Maybe a design change? I dunno I put K&N in mine a few thousand miles back. I found a really good deal on Amazon on my filters under $70. so buying OEMs didn't make sense @ $30 each.
darthandy Posted July 19, 2014 #4 Posted July 19, 2014 The filters with the raised section are the new and improved elements. I had the old flat top ones and recently the paper element started pulling away from he plastic base. The parts manager where I got the new ones told me that they redesigned the filter elements to keep that from happening. It seems that they don't sit quite flat in the pods and get bent just a bit. Over time the stress causes the paper element to pull away from the base allowing unfiltered air into the motor. This is what was happening with mine and why I had to replace them. The new version gets "sandwiched" in the pods keeping everything pressed together. Hard to believe that mother Yamaha chose to redesign something like this to eliminate a problem, considering that nothing has been done about the crappy rear shock - that's too expensive I suppose. SO I guess that sort of forces you to a K&N. Or take the new design filter, cut the raised part off and glue a piece of plastic of some sort over the hole youll be making.
M61A1MECH Posted July 19, 2014 #6 Posted July 19, 2014 On the billet air cleaner covers, it was always stated in the catalog that you had to use K&N filters with those billet covers, they clearly stated that the stock filters should not be used.

It's my understanding that the raised part is an addition to the original plastic base plate. If it can be sliced off parallel to the base plate, there shouldn't be a hole. Personally, I would just go with the K&N filters, but that's just me. Andy
