My friend that has the 2001 RSV, is thinking of going the "Darkside" route of putting a car tire on the rear of his bike. I know another guy who who did it on a bigger Honda who liked it.

Has anybody put the car tire on a RSV ? Is it something that he should, or should not consider ?

Pros ?

Cons?

I am also considering it. there is a darksider section of this forum. it will give you all the info you want, plus a lot that you don't want.

I'm torn trying to decide. My friend just did it to a Honda ACE Tour 1100. Does handle differently. The RS bikes are some-what squirrely when driven hard in corners already. The car tire would not help in that respect. Wish the rear wheel was a 16", more tire choices.

Just found the Darksider section, thanks. I thought that was for the Harley guys... :rotf:

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Read the threads... still confused, seems like a 50/50 on getting the tire actually bought and mounted. I guess i'll let my friend make the decision on his own..

I went into a corner climbing right hander on i70 15 miles west of green river UT at an excessive rate of speed due to in attention and my enjoyment of high speed claiming turns- that particular turn was a severely decreasing radius climbing , slightly off camber turn. I have leveling links - thankfully as they gave me a bit more lean angle. I don't think the car tire would have allowed me to lean over far enough to have survived my mistake. Sure cruising down the interstate a car tire is great but what about that one time when you need ALL the rounded sidewall to not die ?

I tried it. Didn't like the way the bike wiggled around. Went back. My friend has one on his GW. It' s a fireworks show trying to follow him so I know for a fact cornering is no problem!

I personally think that putting a car tire on a motorcycle is just plain stupid. Would you put a motorcycle tire on your car? No? Then why would you do it to a motorcycle?

That question just means you don't know why people do it.

From experience- you can scrape the boards just as easy on a Car tire as a MC tire. Been thru the "Dragon" a couple of times with a "CAR" tire and no issues and lots of sparks- if ya know what I mean.

Its all about the education about the subject. :301:

I have been to the dark side for 33,000 miles on a $70.00 Federal tire. From 0 to 70 mph I like the car tire better. It is much better on wet roads, better stopping traction on all types of roads, and twice the mileage at hath the price. Above 70 mph on long sweeping curves, especially with not level surfaces a good MC tire is better.

No. I do know why they do it. I just would never consider doing this to my bike and then sit my happy butt on the thing and go down the road. It just goes against my grain and I personally feel it is not a safe practice. I do not care how many people have done it successfully. I just would not do it. I would not advise anyone to do it.

I'm thinking when my current rear tyre wears down, I'll go for a car tyre as a replacement.

Mind you I don't 'corner' as most others do.

I have a Voyager kit fitted, so staying upright is what it's all about!

Any thoughts from trikers and outfitters?
