So on my way to take my 84 year old Mom for a ride. 2000 RSV. Started running rough and backfiring then quit all together. Sitting on side of road. Called a friend and he's bringing a trailer.

Turn on key and no dash. Won't turn over etc. headlights com on but seem very dim. Hard to tell in bright sun.

So where do I start? What do I look for? Suppose to go on vacation end of next week. Hope to fix this before then

:sign yeah that::sign yeah that:

And check all fuses, don't forget the main fuse.

Beyond checking for loose terminals and fuses there is not much you can check on the side of the road till you get some test equipment in hand.

Sounds like the way mine did when the stator failed. Charge your battery and check your charging voltages after you check your connections and get home.

Update:

WoW!!! Got a call from a Florida number while sitting on the side of the road. I could not hear the phone because of the traffic. The road was the QEW which is heavy traffic and a lot of trucks etc.. THANK YOU BRAKEPAD..

Anyhow a friend came with a trailer and I am now at home.. When I first pulled off there was no juice but by the time he got to me the battery must have recovered enough to give me a dash. Lights came on etc but not enough to turn it over.

Checked the batter connections and they are clean and tight. Somehow the battery went dead.

I changed the stator about a month ago to a new Ricks Performance Stator so I'm hoping it is not that.

I also changed the regulator at the time to an inexpensive Chinese brand (not sure exactly what) but still have the original which should be still good.

Have the charger on it right now and when charged will start it and test voltages across the battery. Where else should I check? And How?

The only thing I did was change my grips last night (thanks for the help Marcarl) and the old grips were heated. They could not be pulled off so we cut them off and snipped the wires. I thought I had them disconnected from the battery but was wondering if there was a short in there somewhere what would I be looking for?

Is there a main fuse to look for?

Anyhow thanks for the help and offers so far..

The main fuse is behind the cover behind the left side passenger foot rest. It is a good possibility it could be the regulator or one of the connections in between.

Next Update:

I left it on the charger for awhile then started it and measured across the battery. Was getting 12.5 to 12.8 volts and it didn't matter what rpm the engine was at. So I suspected the cheap regulator and swapped it out. Also happens to be the easiest thing to get to. So now it is measuring 13.9 V at 2000 rpm. I think that solved the problem..

Question now it where do I get a good regulator? Brand? Supplier? The one I just replaced I bought off eBay and it lasted about 6 weeks.

Glad to hear you got some help and have figure out the most probable cause.

I hope you get it fully resolved before your holidays.

Believe it or not I have had the best luck form the OEM regulator.

Performance Stator equals HIGH OUTPUT.

Cheap Chinese stator is the weak link in the chain...it broke.

You need a heavy duty regulator for that high output stator.

You're welcome.
