Welcome to the best site!!

The V-4 in these love the RPMs. The sweet spot for these are about 4000 rpm. That will sound wound up, especially if you've come from a v-Twin.

I don't use 5th unless I'm 75 plus most of the time.

Enjoy the ride!!

Just a thought...but if you are getting high rpm (do you have a tach?) in 5th... could it be your clutch is slipping?

How many miles on the bike?

Posted
You might have a VMAX shaft drive in it also. Lower geared. A popular mod.

Any way to find out if this is the case? Thx

The second generation is 1999 thru 2013. First gen is 1983 to 1993. The MK1 is 83 to 85 and MK2 is 86 to 93.

Thx!!!

It does not feel like the clutch is slipping. When in 5th, she pulls great when I twist the throttle, just feel like I need another gear to go into. The bike has 82,000 plus miles. Previous owner said he did clutch, clutch feels fine.

K, Just verification,,, when you are on 5th,, the green OD light is on?

But, stock transmission, 75 mph in 5th should be as comfortable as, say 50 in 4th.

You might backtrack owner(s) as see if the V-max was installed.

If your bike is stock. 1st gear will hit the rev limiter at around 33-35mph. Second gear will hit it at 66-70 mph. Third will top out at 99-103 mph. 4th & 5th gears ???

If you have the v-max gears 1st gear will hit the rev limiter at 30 mph and 2nd will hit it at 60 and third at 90 mph. 4th and 5th gears ??? (I believe the v-max is a very positive mod if you have it keep it as it provides more power at any given speed)

If you have an after market module the rev limiter may be very different. You will need a tach to find out what is going on.

Also if your clutch is slipping you may be getting high revs in 5th gear.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your new bike.

Yes, when in 5th the OD light is indeed on. Reading thru all of this, the Vmax mod sound like the issue I am distribing. I just sent a email to the previous owner to see if the Vmax mod was installed. Will post when I hear back.....by the way this site ROCKS!!! Thanks for helping the newbie!!:bluesbrother:

What kind of bike did you have previously to this one? It might just be that you are used to a bike that was designed for low engine RPMs, like a V twin.
i have had, Vulcan 1500,1600 Classics, VTX 1800 ect. All vtwins. But I have rode a Venture before and I know this one is rpms are way higher than it should. Again the rpm match the speed and torque. Vmax drive is making more since now, just waiting to hear back from PO to see if this is the case. If it is, it has to go.

You should be turning around 4200 at 75mph +/- if you're running the OEM final. Remember the speedo will be showing faster than you're actually moving, unless you have a speed-healer installed...

If it is indeed a VMax differential, I'm sure many members will be willing to swap out with you!!

With the stock rear end 5th gear is pretty much useless below 60mph...

The VMAX one will have the stud shown in top of pic or a hole where it would be.

Unless the gears were swapped out. Then visually no way to tell.

From what the guys here say the V-max mod is the cat's meow for these Ventures. Why not give yourself a bit of time to adjust to the bike?

Boomer...who sez roll on dat throttle and enjoy the ride....especially when ya got loud tunes to listen to! :cool10:

The v-max only gives you a 10% increase in rpm at any given speed. But that 10% makes a big difference in horsepower and torque. If you have it keep it. If not there is an article in the tech section on how to get one.

When I first got my Venture I experienced a big disconnect between the sound of the engine, rpm sound, and what the engine was actually doing. I suppose time would have healed this but I cleared it up by making the mufflers a little louder. Made everything right with the world.

To find out if you have the v-max just nail it in first gear. Take it out until it sputters from the rev limiter and check your speed. Right at 30 v-max & stock module. Over thirty not v-max or not stock module.

Do it again in second gear. Sputters right at 60 = v-max and stock module. Over 60 not v-max or not stock module.

If you come up with a not v-max or not stock module you will need a tachometer to determine which. But still easy to do.

Well it looks like a stock final drive[emoji52] guess I will just have to get use to the higher rpm in 5th.

If it is the stock rear end then you have a problem. I'm still leaning towards it being your clutch.

At 100km/60mph on the speedo, if you are in 5th the engine should bog down if you try to accelerate, NOT wind up.

If you are in 5th and the engine is high revving.... are you burying the needle on the speedometer? Top speed on the RSV is around 110-115mph. Not sure if you'll hit the rev limiter at that point but just run out of power.

Do you know someone else with an RSV that you can ride and see what the difference is?

If you do need a clutch, speak to SkyDoc. He has ads in the member classified.

You aren't a member yet...with the support you are getting already, think you're already $12 ahead.

Try to find another member who is a Venture owner in your area. Check the members map etc. Then try to get the member to ride your bike and tell you what he thinks. Without a tach vs mph reading it is impossible to tell you over the net. Also remember this is a 4 cylinder and as such will sound different than a v-twin. You need to go with a second opinion.
