So, Gurus.. is it important that when re-installing the final drive that you tighten the axle bolt first then the 4 final drive nuts ? :shock3:

What happens if you don't do it in that order ? :confused24:

If you do not do it right then all life on this planet as we have known it will end. It could even cause someone like Yammer Dan to buy a 2nd gen.......:stickpoke::stirthepot::whistling:

I had not heard of this procedure when I had mine apart and I just bolted the final drive on and then installed the rear tire as normal. There have been no issues in the 3 years since I did it. I do not know if it is because I got lucky, or if really does not matter. But look at what has happened to poor Dan since I did not follow the procedure.......

I have read several posts in different threads, that state to align the axle first and tighten then the 4 bolts. I am wondering because since I replaced my rear tire, my bike seems to "lean" to the left ( and I am a real Conservative !) when I let go of the handle bars.

Oh no..now I started a why let go of the handle bars battle..:shock3:

If at speed, I raise my hands 1/2 inch off the grips the bike wants to lean to the left. I don't feel it while riding and it never did it before the new tires.

So I am wondering if I should go through the trouble of re tightening everything and get the bike going straight ( and Conservative) If it keeps leaning left I might have to junk it... :happy65:

I first just slip the axel in place, with out the rear wheel.

Do not install the spacers and do not install / tighten axel nut.

Then adjust the 4 acorn nuts in proper sequence while you use other hand to turn the axel to ensure no binding occurs.

The axel should easily slip back out...

Then install the rear wheel with spacers and axel nut.

(Clean up and re-grease the rear wheel hub pins before you install rear wheel since you have it out.)

See link below which tells you the same.

I think Rick up in Vancouver had the same problem. Found he was sitting off to one side. I can see the bike wanting to go left if the spacer wasn't installed in the right place...??

I believe those threads were referencing those in which the owner had installed a V-Max final drive. Sometimes shimming is required in that case. And to determine the need for a shim, one inserts the axle and determines if the final drive meets the swingarm properly or a shim may be required to make a good match.

If you are using a MKII final drive, there prolly is no need for a shim. Just install the final drive and remount the wheel. The axle SHOULD slip right in.

Could be the folks you are hanging out with........:duck:

Then it should be turning to the extreme right..... :cool10:

I had to slip in the axle, then tighten the housing bolts (just like ECK) because my rear end had a creaking noise. The procedure fixed that.

If your bike is leaning left, just swap that heavy nitrous bottle from the left saddlebag over to the right saddlebag.
