syscrusher Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 So my radio head unit loses it's mind sometimes with the display digits flashing rapidly or blanking out completely. I kind of understand that but now it sometimes won't tune in strong stations?!? It will play the staticky margins to either side of a strong station or distant stations but then when tuned to the center frequency it becomes silent? I suppose that I should try to obtain a replacement head unit but I just don't understand why it would be doing this. Any ideas?
dna9656 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Well it's old, probably got green stuff growing in it as well Electronics go bad with age, usually the capacitors and diodes like in your TCI. Finding some one that knows how to fix solid state stuff is near impossible, you might try a stereo repair shop...Prob. cost $100.00 to set it on the bench... I have 2 radio heads I'm not going to use because with Wi-Fi technology you can carry your music player your pocket, or find one that's mounted on the bike. If you have a phone you can probably find a plug in radio accessory so it can be a radio too or it may have that technology in it already, plus Wi-Fi ready and Wi-Fi equipped helmets are available. I get having everything working like it was brand new, that's cool; but only you can figure out what's best for you.

Are you about to make a proposal or proposition? I'm looking for the panel that goes where the radio goes when you don't have a radio; also the panel that goes where the CLASS controller goes... Marcarl Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Good chance that the top part of the connection is not mating properly with the bottom unit. You should first try a good cleaning, then you can try to tighten up the connectors in the head, you'll need a very small screwdriver and a magnifying glass, and you can try raising the lower unit to more closely match the top unit, loosen the screws and add a nut or two to raise it.

They both come on but no sound which really doesn't mean anything on this bike. I have been chasing bad wiring practices since I got her. Edited July 18, 2014 by dna9656

CHeck the sockets that mate up don't have loose screws. I used blue loctite on the little screws
Prairiehammer Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I used blue loctite on the little screws It is not recommended to use Loctite threadlocker on fasteners near plastic. The base chemical in Loctite is methacrylate ester. This chemical will soften or deteriorate most thermoplastics, such as PVC and ABS. This ABS destruction has been well documented as a consequence when used on motorcycle fasteners adjacent to plastic parts. From the manufacturer of Loctite (I would amend their warning to read "will likely result"): Not Recommended For Use on plastic parts, particularly thermoplastic materials where stress cracking of the plastic could result
dna9656 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I don't have the panel and I'm not sure what to offer but I would send you $10 to cover shipping...... I will look on ebay and see what the going $$ is; I'm sure we can beat that all to pieces.
