Side panel vents...

My panel vent louvers are kind of all to pieces....been looking at them ....glued some of it together as before...but been kind of thinking about a more permanate fix by making them out of aluminum and maybe having them black anodized. Is there enough demand for replacements to maybe make a few? ....kind of cheaper than just one set. What I had in mind was to make the moving parts of them out of aluminum so they don't break so easy or get brittle like plastic and using the original housing......thoughts anyone?

A set that opens and closes?? All the replacments I've seen are solid panels to block off the hole. Should be some interest. Any way for pics??

No...I haven't built them yet....but I need some myself for my 86. ?.......How many years are the same and will fit? I worked in a sheet metal fab shop for 12 years.....Know exactly how to do it.....need access to some equipment...but I do know a guy that has a fab shop so.....was kind of wondering if there was enough interest to build extra while I was at it.

83 to 93 take the same panel I think. I have a few of the things stuck away somewhere. But there should be some interest.

....hadn't thought of powder coating.....will it stick to aluminum? ...seen a lot of steel powder coated....was just thinking of aluminum cause of weight.

There are three different louvered vents on the Venture:

The small ones on the dash between the speakers and the instrument cluster.

The ones in the fairing lowers that allow air control to the rider's shins.

The (most problematic) vents in the side covers of the 1985-1993. These are never found intact, especially the right side louvers.

 

I had a broken vane in the side cover louvered vent on my '90. I fabricated a single vane from brass sheet with a copper 14 gauge wire soldered to the back side of the vane and painted black. It looked OK, but because I didn't fabricate the little pivot arm for that single vane, it would not pivot open with the rest of the vanes. If one examines the individual vanes, one sees that it is a bit more complex than just a center pivoting flap of material.

 

I imagined that the individual vanes could be easily made with a 3D printer.

I have just been posted into the sheet metal fab shop in the Dockyard, and they send lots of aluminum to the powder coaters. I'm told it should be bead blasted first, so the powder coating sticks better.

I deliberately removed the vents to permit better engine cooling for a longer lasting engine. It's just not smart to block radiator air flow, and could care less how hot my leg might get on a warm day - I'll just move my feet to the hwy pegs getting my shins out of the hot air flow. Besides, with the vent removed, I can see and reach into the engine better.

I guess that is true, but so far I have never had a problem with it running high temp. if anything is kind of on the cold side. The cooling fan will cycle on and off if it is very hot day and sitting in traffic but never got to hot yet.

I've never had a problem with it running high temps either, but I perfer to be set for the odd times I roll into some town with 104°F temps with stop and go traffic, or 92°F mid day mountain pass climbs. I much prefer proper function over cosmetics.

My '85 had side bents . . .

 

I remove them in the cold months and install solid clear plastic panels in the summer.

I like folks to clearly see that beautiful V4!

That is correct. I have powder coated LOTS of stuff, alum, steel, exotic metals, most any thing can be power coated it it can stand the heat, the minimum is around 230F I believe but the shop I worked in kept the over at 425. I would be interested in a set...

I'll take a set! Heck if you can make a set for the lower fairing vents, I'll take those as well! Seems like a great Idea. I notice with mine they seem to open and close whenever they want!

 

Would aluminum damage the plastic on the side panels though?

I agree...I like to use them for winter riding...but want to close them solidly for summer. Don't need more heat in Arizona!

The Vents for my 87 are long gone, I found the 2 pc. chrome ones Yamaha sold, but I'd like to have vent's. It sounds like a great idea, but cost would be the final word
