suds Posted June 28, 2014 #1 Posted June 28, 2014 (edited) I was out for a ride today and the speedometer quit working. When I got to a safe place to pull over I saw that the end of the cable had come loose at the front wheel. I've never worked with speedometers before but from reading posts here it seems there should be an inner cable that appears to be missing on my bike. Past posts have talked about using a universal cable for cars that may need to be cut to fit. Any suggestions here? Part numbers? Also, what lube should I use when I do get the replacement? I have a 1990 VR. Thanks in advance for any help. suds Edited June 28, 2014 by suds added info on bike

suds Posted June 28, 2014 Author #3 Posted June 28, 2014 Any idea what would cause it to come undone? Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Venturous Randy Posted June 28, 2014 #4 Posted June 28, 2014 The cable is probably laying on the road somewhere. Yeah, you lost your cable and all you have is the housing. Backtrack and you may see it laying in the road. If you find it, just clean it up, regrease it and reinstall it. Yes, the housing fittings have been known to come loose before. The cable itself will go in from either direction and has a ring on one end so it will only go so far. The trick I use to not loose my cable is I put the ring end at the top and I put a wire tie very tightly around the cable housing and when I undo it from the speedometer, it will only drop down so far as the tie keeps it from going through the hole the housing goes through. This way, if either end of the housing comes loose, I will not loose the cable. RandyA

Yammer Dan Posted June 28, 2014 #6 Posted June 28, 2014 If I remember right that's a reasonable item from Mama Yamaha.
dingy Posted June 29, 2014 #7 Posted June 29, 2014 $20 from boats.net + shipping. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1990/VENTURE%20ROYALE%20-%20XVZ1300DA/METER/parts.html Gary
frankd Posted June 29, 2014 #8 Posted June 29, 2014 I had the cable unscrew from the front tire several times on m 83, and finally I cleaned all the grease from the threads and used Loc-Tite to keep it from unscrewing. After this, I just use a pair of vice-grips to loosen it when I want to pull the front tire. On my 89, I haven't had to do that yet, I've just made sure it's tightened firmly. Be careful though so you don't over tighten it.
ricksbike Posted June 29, 2014 #9 Posted June 29, 2014 Napa sells a universal cable. That works fine,I used one on my 92 vr.

suds Posted July 5, 2014 Author #11 Posted July 5, 2014 $31CDN from Yamaha. Easy-peazy install and I have a speedo again!
KIC Posted July 5, 2014 #12 Posted July 5, 2014 Lost mine same way. On the freeway and then it was gone. In fact this post is making me go out and tighten mine again since I changed my front tire last month.
Evan Posted July 5, 2014 #13 Posted July 5, 2014 Mine came loose also last week but at the top end. When that happens, you are unlikely to lose anything and as long as your hand is not too large, you can reach up into the headlight area (after you remove the headlight) to reconnect the cable.
