tufftom4 Posted June 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2014 I used to tie a chicken leg to a string and toss it in the water and when you feel a tug slowly pull it to the shore and there would be a couple of blue crabs following it then get the net and scoop them up, nothing like fresh crabs. Yup.. Seen a 12 yr old boy with a chicken neck on a string, and, a long handled fish net. He said trick was to net them as soon as you see them or they will let go when they get close to the surface. I may be doing the same thing at $197 a bushel!
cecdoo Posted June 22, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2014 or you can pickup a crabtrap at a yardsale, punch a couple holes in a can of oily tuna fish and put in trap, tie an old clorox bottle with your name on it to 10ft of rope and then tie it to the trap. Throw the whole works into the bay and leave it there for a day or two, then pull it back up and hope you have a trap full of "keepers" we had a place on the bay in Del. and it was a weekend ritual to go crabbin and clammin. Craig That's cool! I take it no fishing license is required?
tufftom4 Posted June 22, 2014 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2014 If you use traps in most states you have to get a license. I know mass ,Jersey, Maine, Fl ,and the Carolinas require a license for traps.
Eck Posted June 22, 2014 Share #7 Posted June 22, 2014 I wish I could go with you Joe, but I can't at this time, plus, (no offence please), but I dont eat or like crabs or anything out of the ocean for that matter. All I can say is that your intentions are so very nice of you to do what you are going to do, in remembering someone who has touched your life so deep in the past. I had a friend (Fred) who touched my life and my heart deeply but he has gone to the other side. I hope someday I find him again. You have a very kind and soft heart Joe. :thumbsup2::thumbsup2:
dacheedah Posted June 23, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 23, 2014 used to use traps that was a square with triangles on each side. wired a chicken leg to the bottom and soak a short bit, quickly pull up and crab. we used several and filled a cooler in no time. CaptainJoe Posted June 23, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted June 23, 2014 Eck, That's exactly how I feel about Marie and Harold(deceased). Thanks for the kind words. Dacheedah, Probably going to just buy prepared hard shelled crabs. Don't want to fool with out of state licenses . Although that would make for an excellent ride to the Ocean! Dan, Sure hope they finally find out whats going on. Penny and I will be praying they do...
cecdoo Posted June 23, 2014 Share #11 Posted June 23, 2014 10 years ago you did not need a license in Delaware to crab or clam, I dont even remember getting one to fish, things may have changed since then but I doubt it. They have no sales tax and little to no property taxes down there. No helmet law either, for bikers or crabs!! Craig
dfitzbiz Posted June 23, 2014 Share #12 Posted June 23, 2014 Captian Joe, Here is the place to get steamed crabs near Caledonia http://daveandjanes.com/ I have been to Dave and Jane's several times and the crabs are very good. They are located within about 20 miles of Caledonia. They may sell you a bushel of live crabs if you ask. I am in Chambersburg, PA about 5 miles from Caledonia. Give me a call when you are in the area if you need any assistance. Fitz
