BigLenny Posted June 18, 2014 #1 Posted June 18, 2014 I was just wondering. As it pertains to our riders map that many of us have in our signature when we post, does it have to be on a bike that we personally own. The reason I ask is; say I take a business trip to California and I take my wife with me. If while we're there, we decided to rent a Harley and ride for a day or so just to see the area, would I then be qualified to mark California as a state that we have ridden in. Or if we went to Hawaii and did the same, would that qualify? Just wondering. I wanna make sure I "stay inside the rules". LOL.
bongobobny Posted June 18, 2014 #2 Posted June 18, 2014 Well, when you rent a motorcycle technically it is yours for that specific time period so yes, it counts... PS That's how I plan on getting Hawaii this fall!
Money Venture Posted June 18, 2014 #3 Posted June 18, 2014 No, in order to get Hawaii, one must ride their own bike to Hawaii.
Bubber Posted June 18, 2014 #4 Posted June 18, 2014 I would say people mark their states based on their own interpretation of what and why they are marking it. For instance, one may mark the states that they have been in not just driven a bike in. Mark it any way you want and for what ever reason you want. NO RULES. Make up your own. No need to be a sheeeeep and follow the crowd. Baaa. and that is about what it is worth too. Bubber

LOL.My personal rule is any state I rode a motorcycle in for a period of time long enough for me to have to urinate while it that state. I mark it on the list.
Freebird Posted June 18, 2014 #6 Posted June 18, 2014 I agree that it does not have to be your bike. It can be a rental, a friends bike, whatever. I think that it SHOULD be a bike though and more than a ride to the end of the block and back.
djh3 Posted June 18, 2014 #7 Posted June 18, 2014 My own rule is I have to rode a bike in that state. I have some Canadian provinces now I could add but whatever map I'm using you either get USA or Canada.
Prairiehammer Posted June 18, 2014 #8 Posted June 18, 2014 My own rule is I have to rode a bike in that state. I have some Canadian provinces now I could add but whatever map I'm using you either get USA or Canada. If you use http://www.epgsoft.com/VisitedStatesMap/ you can generate a 'states' map and save to your computer, then generate a 'provinces' map and save it. Then include both jpeg photos in your signature block.
JohnT Posted June 19, 2014 #9 Posted June 19, 2014 My problem seeems to be that I can no longer "find my way" to where to mark my states.
Brake Pad Posted June 19, 2014 #10 Posted June 19, 2014 One of the other points is, you have to do an least 100 miles in that state to consider:thumbsup2: it a state ridden in
Wade 2000 Posted June 19, 2014 #11 Posted June 19, 2014 I agree that it does not have to be your bike. It can be a rental, a friends bike, whatever. I think that it SHOULD be a bike though and more than a ride to the end of the block and back. I'm in agreement. Should be on a bike and substantial mileage to count or the Map Police will be informed and you will be punished to the fullest extent of the law:322:
cagie Posted June 19, 2014 #12 Posted June 19, 2014 My personal rule is any state I rode a motorcycle in for a period of time long enough for me to have to urinate while it that state. I mark it on the list. LMAO, guess I've 'marked' most every state 'cept 'laska, haywhyee, and new england. hope i can do new england this fall...
alwrmcusn Posted June 19, 2014 #13 Posted June 19, 2014 There are a few of us, especially military, who have ridden in Europe, Asia, Australia etc. Where are those maps??
Dragonslayer Posted June 19, 2014 #14 Posted June 19, 2014 One of the other points is, you have to do an least 100 miles in that state to consider:thumbsup2: it a state ridden inI don't think a 100 mile rule is fair, I like my urination rule better. Point being my ride into Montana. I left Yellowstone one morning to get breakfast through the iconic northern gate into Montana. The ride into Montana to the next town was only a mile or so but it had a nice restuarant that served those big O'le Country Boy breakfast. After eating I naturally used the rest room to relieve myself. I then hoped on the bike and road back into Yellowstone........Point being......Montana is marked on my map.
Dragonslayer Posted June 19, 2014 #15 Posted June 19, 2014 I'm in agreement. Should be on a bike and substantial mileage to count or the Map Police will be informed and you will be punished to the fullest extent of the law:322:Definitely just not that you have visited a state by the use of some other form of transportation.... It has to be on a motorcycle to be included in this forum or the Map Police will come and get you.
Bubber Posted June 19, 2014 #16 Posted June 19, 2014 That's it I am calling the map police and reporting all of you for violations of the internationally sanctioned rules of flag marking. Ya right! What ever floats your boat, flips your skirt, or raises you flag pole (pun intended). Isn't marking of the states for your own personal benefit or is it to strut you stuff in front of the forum. Example. Rhode Island in spots isn't even 100 miles across so if you cut across it you wouldn't be able to count it or mark it on your map. Rules are rules except when they are less than intelligent rules. I don't have a map but if I did I would mark it in the way it meant something to me or should I mark it in a way that means something to someone else? Bubber
Trader Posted June 19, 2014 #17 Posted June 19, 2014 But I can go HOURS and HOURS without having to use a restroom (or tree)...so under the urination rule,a lot of states are so small I wouldn't be allowed to "mark" them. (come on....think about it) At Galina last year there was talk of riding to the "4 corners" so we could mark them off our map. I doubt the plan was to spend much time in each state.
Stache Posted June 19, 2014 #19 Posted June 19, 2014 Towing your bike threw a State does not count. Unless you're sitting on it on the trailer. Then you get dumbass points.
BigLenny Posted June 19, 2014 Author #20 Posted June 19, 2014 Thanks for the responses folks. Y'all are making it perfectly clear about how I should mark my map. Errrrrr......I think. So far I've learned: 1. It has to be on a motorcycle. 2. Riding on a motorcycle while it sits on a trailer doesn't count. 3. Has to be more than just a jump in, turn around, and leave. 4. Can be on a rented bike since I for that period of time sudo-own it. 5. As Bubber says, "whatever floats my boat" counts. 6. And the most important rule is: if I drain my lizard while I'm in that state, it counts. Anybody else have any rules?
Barrycuda Posted June 19, 2014 #21 Posted June 19, 2014 Who knew there were all these personal protocols and regulations. For me, I would like it to be on my bike first and foremost, then a friends, then a rental. Regardless of which bike, I do have to actually ride the bike minimum of 25 miles in that state for my own "logical" reasoning to qualify... Either way, make up your own rules and go for it!!!
Venturous Posted June 20, 2014 #22 Posted June 20, 2014 On my map... it is anywhere I have ridden a motorcycle... not necessarily mine. For me that would include the southwest states and 10 countries in Europe. But, I do not think anyone should ever count a state that they only trailered their bike through...
Dragonslayer Posted June 20, 2014 #23 Posted June 20, 2014 Towing your bike threw a State does not count. Yea Condor did you hear that.
saddlebum Posted July 4, 2014 #24 Posted July 4, 2014 But I can go HOURS and HOURS without having to use a restroom (or tree)...so under the urination rule,a lot of states are so small I wouldn't be allowed to "mark" them. (come on....think about it)Now by Marking ....are you actually lifting your leg by a tree or fire hydrant
Brake Pad Posted July 4, 2014 #25 Posted July 4, 2014 I became big into touring after meeting a rider from the Blue Knights Chapter #3 Cranford NJ I started touring at the age of 19 when I bought my CB750, converted it into a touring bike with Vetter bags, built my own trailer hitch and sears trailer and car carrier. One hundred miles was the Golden Rule
