Oldseadog Posted June 18, 2014 #1 Posted June 18, 2014 Ok, I'm on my way to Venture West, and after a short ferry ride I start my '84 VR and the only thing on the dash that works is the Speedo. We pull over check things over, find a fuse loose, tighten the clamp springs and it's working. Yeah. Down at the road a ways pull over for a rest, restart and no dash again. Play with the fuse, nothing. Make the choice to carry on, hit a small dip and the dash lights up as if I just turned the key on. It goes through the checks, and everything is good. Next stop same thing. Now I'm hoping a nights rest will bring it back to life, but I'm also hoping someone on here has an idea what may be wrong and what I need to check.
Peder_y2k Posted June 18, 2014 #2 Posted June 18, 2014 You tightened the clamp springs? The fuse clamp is now likely broken as they don't like being tightened. If broken, need to find a way to attach the fuse to the remaining clamp end, maybe use a paper clip.... or something similar. Time for a new fuse block using the newer blade type. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
Oldseadog Posted June 18, 2014 Author #3 Posted June 18, 2014 I am going to do the fuse upgrade when I get home! Hoping I can get this problem bandaided until i get home.
Oldseadog Posted June 18, 2014 Author #4 Posted June 18, 2014 Problem fixed for now. The signal fuse was loose because the U clips were not holding properly. I squeezed them together to make better contact, now all is good. Definitely doing the fuse block upgrade when I get home!
GeorgeS Posted June 18, 2014 #5 Posted June 18, 2014 Auto parts store--- buy an " In Line fuse holder " Buy some #18 or #20 wire . --- roll, of black tape Something to stirp wire with. And a pack of 15 amp fuse's that fit the in line fuse holder. Cut wires each side of fuse holder, and make a tempory installation of the in line fuse holder. Will work OK for the trip, untill permanent fix is completed !!
dna9656 Posted June 21, 2014 #6 Posted June 21, 2014 I bought a 8 circuit "ATO" (I think) fuse block on line. It uses standard automotive fuses, the plastic ones with different colors to help ID the rating (amps). You can get the smaller :ATO" style fuses but I don't know if they are called "ATO". I moved ALL my fuses to this block, even the in line ones (the CLASS is one) and the MAIN 40 amp fuse. If you would like more pics just ask. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk195/dna9656/IMG_0254.jpg
IronMike Posted June 21, 2014 #7 Posted June 21, 2014 How can first gens be faster when you have to stop for all this wiring?
Oldseadog Posted June 21, 2014 Author #8 Posted June 21, 2014 Because they keep running, we just can't monitor stuff for a bit.
JohnT Posted June 21, 2014 #9 Posted June 21, 2014 Just replaced mine a few weeks ago. My tails lights went out on me. Had to wrap a bit of foil around each end of the fuse to take up the slack tween it and the clips. (did not defeat fuse) On the way home I also had intermittent dash display. Came home and did the fuse block upgrade the next day. Even with no dash we still know our 1st Gens are faster than a 2nd Gen. Mirrors don't require electricity. Dumb @$$ question time. Which fuse is the CLASS fuse? I shall probably remove it and tidy up wiring in there a bit. Seeing as my bike now is one step closer to being like me. It also now lacks CLASS.
