YamaDuck Posted June 13, 2014 #1 Posted June 13, 2014 2nd Gen. I have followed a post on how to remove the master cylinder slave unit. It is a very good post and I have removed it without any problems. Currently waiting on parts to arrive. In the post the author states his shifter seal was leaking oil and recommends replacing it while everything is torn down. My shifter seal is now leaking also. I did not see it leaking before, ever. Now both of ours are leaking. Is it leaking because the system is now open allowing air to enter the engine? It was not leaking before but is now leaking a pretty good bit. The post on changing out the slave did not say how to change the seal nor can I find anything out doing a search or looking at the shop manual. Does anyone know of a post on how to change the seal? I know if you wiggle the shifter shaft the whole in the seal seem to stay put and you can see the shaft moving around within the seal and you can see oil start to come through. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as always. Harry
djh3 Posted June 13, 2014 #2 Posted June 13, 2014 I would have to say it is pressed into the case. You should be able to use a punch or a socket that fits the seal and knock it out the backside of the cover. Then clean the area and get a socket that fits closest to the outside of the seal but still fits into the hole the seal goes into. Tap lightly and it should drive the seal in. A little grease (I use white grease) on the out side of the seal and it should help. If I'm wrong someone will let you know I'm sure.
bongobobny Posted June 13, 2014 #3 Posted June 13, 2014 In your case the seal is 14 years old, so it should be replaced even if it wasn't leaking as preventative maintenance...
YamaDuck Posted June 13, 2014 Author #4 Posted June 13, 2014 Good point bongobobny! So I understand the concept of knocking it out with a socket but there is the shifter shaft coming out through the center of the seal. The shaft looks to be about 6 inches long and if I were able to get a socket or a punch on it then it would be tapped into the engine not out. Do you go in from the right side of the engine where the clutch basket is?
ragtop69gs Posted June 13, 2014 #5 Posted June 13, 2014 I just got done doing this job, to get the seal out I poked a hole in it then used a hooked pick inserted into the hole and pulled it out. When you poke the hole, dont go in to far, there is a land behind it so try not to mar it. the new seal installs easy, just tap into hole till flush with the bore. That seal will always leak when you have the middle gear cover off because it supports the outer end of the shaft. The seal is in the motor case not the cover. Be sure to lube the shaft where the seal rides Nd the outer end where the cover supports it.

Ok one more question. Where do I find the part number I that I need to order the seal. I can't find it on any of the parts supply diagrams. Or I am looking at it and I don't know what I'm looking at.
Neil86 Posted June 13, 2014 #7 Posted June 13, 2014 I believe you are looking for item 9 on this parts diagram... http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/2000/ROYAL%20STAR%20VENTURE%20-%20XVZ1300TFM/SHIFT%20SHAFT/parts.html

If I can add it before they ship I will not have to pay additional shipping.
djh3 Posted June 13, 2014 #9 Posted June 13, 2014 (edited) For whatever reason Yamaha decided to show the seal with the trans stuff even though it installs in the cover. I havent looked at how it goes together, but if the seal is on the outside of the case sometimes you can run a sheet metal screw in it and pull it out with pliers or vise grips by the screw. I will say now that I have looked at the service manual it is atrocious as far as disassembly of a lot of things on this bike. Edited June 13, 2014 by djh3

I have some very long needle nose pliers. It's about 6"'s up in there with not a lot of room. I want to be very careful as Jay said you can mar the surface underneath the seal if I'm not careful.
ragtop69gs Posted June 13, 2014 #11 Posted June 13, 2014 oil seal P/N 93102-14209-00 Did you also order the sealing washers for the hydraulic line connection to the slave cylinder ? you need 2 P/N 90201-10118-00

ragtop69gs Posted June 13, 2014 #13 Posted June 13, 2014 Also look at the rubber dust boots on each end of the shift rod, they dry out and crack, nows a good time to do those too. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk 2
bongobobny Posted June 13, 2014 #14 Posted June 13, 2014 Also don't forget to lube the seal prior to installing, it is actually how seals seal! The rubber has microscopic pores that need to be filled with whatever it is sealing. You can use motor oil, assembly lube, or non synthetic grease...

If you'd have read what I posted earlier you'd have seen that I did mention that NOW.... go fix your refrigerator
bongobobny Posted June 13, 2014 #16 Posted June 13, 2014 So ya did Jay, so ya did!! New refrigerator is being delivered next Thursday. The mother board fixed the fan but the refrigerator is still not working, freezer is. Time to shoot the horse and ride another one! What's more important is finishing the bathroom so we can get it settled again before the 4th!

YamaDuck Posted June 13, 2014 Author #18 Posted June 13, 2014 I have plenty of motor oil to seal the seal with I also have some lithium grease if that would be better. The back of the slave unit when I took it out had a bunch of dried crud on the back rubber boot. The crud was all over the push rod that sticks out of the engine case. I wiped the crud off as best I could. I will use some carb cleaner or brake cleaner to try and clean the push rod before re-assembly. Should I use something like axle grease, or motor oil, or lithium grease to put on the push rod before I put the new slave unit back on?

I used a dab of moly grease, I suppose lithium would also work well, you just don't want it to melt off with the engine heat
