89 rear sits 3" too high?

Hi all. Newbie needs help.

Bought an 89 XVZ 1300. PO let me testride with "blown rear shock air line". I told him I'd buy bike if he fixed. I bought bike and I'm told it sits THREE INCHES TOO HIGH IN THE REAR!!! I know it ain't anywhere as smooth a ride as my old Wing... even with only 5psi in the rear shock.

What's going on and did I screw up royale [PUN]

I have an 89 parts bike in the shed (blown head gasket, broken clutch cylinder and other) but I really am not ready to do a shock swap if it's something simple.

Ideas and opinions please...

Who told you it is 3 inches to high in the rear?

My nephew, who put 45000 miles on my 89 parts bike. I was asking him why the centerstand seemed so short - bike has both wheels firmly on ground while on centerstand! He said rear wheel should be 1-3 inches off the ground and something's funky with the monoshock.

The previous owner supplied the old shock and yoke assembly so I could repair it in future - said he got replacement online and it fit / lined-up just like original. I smell a rodent...

I'll get pictures when I get home this weekend once the honeydew is did.

Hoew much air in rear?

Hard to tell how low it is sitting while on centerstand.

Take a meas. from the ground to a common ref. point on the bike, and ask other first gen owners to do the same, to see if your bike really sits 3" higher?

Yamaha changed the linkage and swingarm in 1988..if he somehow used a 83-87 linkage it might explain the difference. The linkage arm length is most likely different....best bet get the parts bike out...side by side and compare the linkages. In any event...don't ride the bike till you sort out the cause.

Thanks. That's probably EXACTLY what's going on. 20/20 hindsight shows me seller was evasive about parts source.

well as I say....somehow...have a look at both. These bikes have typically been through several owners hard to know whats been done and when.

Simple solution: I'll verify air pressure on parts and ride bikes and measure ground clearance to bottom edge of bags when I get home Saturday. I'll post then. Eyeball says 2 inches different ...

2 inches higher and definitely different geometry under there. Now I know. Thanks for input folks. I'll post again after I tear parts bike down, free the assembly the do same to ridable and install everything. Yuk. I'd rather be riding...

Final word: Different geometry on 3 purchased replacement shocks & linkages. Bike VIN says 1989. Took bikes original shock and linkage apart, installed best of 3 used shocks into linkage and then into bike and got satisfaction. I honestly don't know if bike is 88 or 89 - possibly an 89 built with 88 frame?!!! Don't really care as it's now ridable and I'll never have another shock problem, not with 2 spares .

It could be an 89 built in late 88, but both years use the same swing arms, A-arms and shocks, so you should be ok with it.

Got it sorted out with original to the bike linkages and new recycled shock. Had total of 4 shocks and linkages laying around or mounted. 3 linkages too high, only correct was original so it's back on bike and all is well.

I have an 86 and 89. I took a look at the linkages on both and they are physically different. Take a look a parts illustration of the 2 and they are different. I thought my 86 sits high but it has the correct linkage, any thoughts.
