Luggage rack on, now no helmets in trunk

I love the look of the luggage rack on my bike. Problem now, the had such close clearance before that now I cannot close the lid with my fullface helmet becuase the bold heads will rub.

Aside from trying to find carriage type bolts to fit, any ideas?

Even before the rack, my wifes Scorpion full-face would not fit anyhow unless I took the mat out of the bottom.

What's the reason for putting the helmets in the trunk? When riding, you'll be wearing them, and while parked, hang'em on the helmet locks.

We got caught in the rain last week and when we stopped did not want to hang the helmets and have them get wet and did not want to carry them inside with us to eat.

Carry a couple of small shopping bags that will fit around the skidlids, and a few twist ties or rubber bands to tie them around the exposed D ring strap when you hang em in the wet.

 

They wont take up much space at all, bundled up and tied with the rubber bands, and stuffed into a pocket on the bike somewhere, and if you do some shopping, you wont have to empty the trunk to store the helmets.

 

Of course if you carry a bike cover, they will fit under it too.

Hang the helmet on the helmet hook? On day, he will come out of a restaurant to find some moron with a biker vendeta has poured a soda, or a beer, or an ice cream cone in his helmet.

 

If I leave the bike where I can't see it, helmets are in the trunk.

True that...but if some moron has intentions of harm, he wont let THAT little thing stand in his way....I've had two seats slit with a knife, and one time somebody knocked over my Ultra, and just drove off.

 

Id rather that somebody damage a helmet, than damage my bike!

My full face is tight in the trunk without a rack. I set it in upright. I saw someone the other day put one in laying on its side. Looked like a better fit that way.

I have yamahas rack on the venture and I can still put both mine and my wifes helmets in the trunk upright. They are HJC full face. I like the baggy and twist tie idea!

Tried laying them sideways. Did not work. My Fulmer helmet barely fits in there. My extra HJC fits, no problem. Wifes Scorpion does not fit at all.

If we are in eating, I try to sit were I can see the bike. Then I don't mind if the helmets are in the trunk or hooks. But times when the bike is out of site...

When the weather warms up enough, we wear 1/2 helmets anyhow. They fit in truck or saddle bags.

- - - and that's the EXACT reason I no longer take my helmet into a diner when I have a feed. It tends to eat more than I do. :rotf:

I put some of those self-adhesive felt pads over the heads of the bolts on the inside of the trunk lid. That way, if they made contact with a helmet when the lid was closed, they wouldn't scratch the finish.

I think most of us have trouble getting full face helmets into this trunk - couldn't Yamahaha just give us an extra 1/4"??? Anyway, changing the bolts helps a lot. I can put two full face Nolan helmets side-by-side as long as I make sure they are touching in the middle and pushed all the way back (but critical to make sure none of the cords are caught under the edge).

I think a lot of the reason some fit and others don't is the helmet size. A medium or large is not going to take up nearly as much room as a 2XL. That said my 2XL Nolan Flip will fit in the trunk of my 1stGen. But you can forget about putting two in there.....
