rear fender hitting caliper/ bottoming out

hello,

 

my friend has a 2009 venture, his bike keeps bottoming out and hitting rear caliper.

when he bought it, it had a lowering kit installed, the previous owner gave him all stock parts.

he had it put back to stock by a shop, it still sits lower than others that we've seen.

he's running 55 lbs in rear shock, it helps but still happens alot.

it happens more when riding 2, but it happens when riding single too,riding single about 180lbs.

 

trying to figure out whats going on, the yamaha dealer cant figure out the issue either.

 

ive seen it while riding behind him on my 96 royal star classic.

ive bottomed out once, but it was a really bad pot hole while riding heavy dbl.

 

any thoughts? thanks for any advice!

Any chance the shop gave the lowering kit parts back to your friend?

 

I wondering if they left the lowering links on, thinking they looked the same as the

originals. He can measure the links hole spacing to see if the spares are the lowering ones or stock.

yes he has all the parts, i'll check the measurement

Lowering links are 1/4 to 1/2 LONGER than stock. (opposite of what one might think)

Hold one of the "removed" links up to what is mounted, see what you got.

 

Also, it would have been better (and cheaper) if the shop had simply left the caliper relocation adapter on the bike. This would guarantee it would never bottom,,,,, AND it is SO EASY to change or inspect the rear brake pads that way.

 

After I got my RSV lowered in front, I went back to stock links on the rear,,, but left the caliper in the down position.

Sounds like the shock is shot or msybe he didn't put the caliper back in correct position

i held the extra set up, and they were shorter, 20 min later it was sitting 1 1/2" higher.

 

he's very happy now, thank you very very much for the fast help!!!

the better lowering kit has a caliper relocation bracket to avoid bottoming out.

I think they switched back to stock caliper mount but left the lowering links on the bike.

they did, they put the caliper back to stock and somehow put the lowering links back in instead of stock. it happens, its fixed. thats all that matters.
