Decoding engine numbers.

Does anybody have a link to decode engine numbers? I just picked up another 84 the other day, but it has a 1300cc engine in it. Curious to know what year it it. Engine number is 1NL-002188

I'm still not having any luck tacking down the year of this engine. Do ya suppose the stealership would be of any use?

Pretty sure a 1NL is an 86 1300 engine.

I'm usually wrong, however.....

The letter L in the engine code 1NL should be the year designator.

L refers to the year 1990.

I have a 1986 parts bike and engine # starts 1NL

[Neil86]

One site shows the starting engine serial numbers like this

86 1NL-000100~

87 1NL-010100~

89 1NL-027101~

 

So it appears it is an 86 engine.
