I have a 1999 RSTD. I recently removed the K&N style filters from the 28 mm carbs and replaced them with a stock air box and filter. Why? Because I was tired of the vibrating off not to mention the smell of raw fuel even when cruising around 45 to 50 mph.

What I did;

Removed the K&N filters including the filter on the crankcase vent tube.

Installed a new filter in the air box, connected the crank case vent and the drip tube to the box, set the box over the carbs and seated the boots, then tightened, the rubber gas line cracked so I cut off the end and reattached to the tank. When it was all buttoned up I started it and let it run for a bit.

After all connections and letting run for a bit I took it out for a drive to find that under heavy acceleration and the rpms get up there the engine bogs down to the point it feels like it will stall if I don't let up. Under slower acceleration it will get to about 60 or 65 before it starts to bog down again. And it happens in every gear if accelerating hard.

I am trying to determine how to adjust the mixture screws lean it out a bit see if that's it or not.

Any help would be great, dealer estimates $700 to figure t out and fix.

Thank you

Before you go trying to adjust carbs, check your fuel filter or a partially kinked fuel line. Seems to me you're saying it runs fairly well until it gets the rpms up to the point the carbs are running out of fuel.

So the bike ran fine with the K&N set up other than fuel smell?

You should not be smelling raw fuel at 45-50 with K&N filters. You have another problem. Fuel leak, stuck float, float set to high.

Cracked fuel line? if the ends are deteriorated the inside might be also. Ditto the fuelfilter and I would check and replace all the fuel lines. Is the fuel tank full? If it runs good with a full tank but starts bogging below 1/2 tank then check the fuel pump.

How long have you owned this bike? Need more info/background.

well if somebody did a rejet on the carbs, evident by the bod filters on it, you're not getting enough air to it.

read this write up, you may not want to tear down your carbs to see but you can put the pods back on and see if it runs right and then decide if you want to open up your oem box( you just need to cut out the extra 2 1/8" hole and not cut out between them, that's the way mine is). or I have an extra airbox bottom and oem filter already cut out, I can sent you and you can try it out and if it runs good then cut your out or keep mine and send your back to me.
