???????????

I am in the process of doing the Time for second gear repair

After removing the oil pan to access the case bolts that are inside I found this pin. It is about 4mm thick x 17mm long (1/8 x 11/16) It is solid and appears to be hardened.

It was just laying right here beside Bolt #21. So I'm sure it just landed there on the last flip-over during cleaning.

The motor has been flipped and turned over several times during the cleaning phase.

I think it may have fallen out of something while removing components such as the starter, starter gears.

Before I started to clean the motor I removed the left crankcase cover (generator) and the starter gears fell out. That was when I decide to take the engine outside and clean it. So I put the generator cover back on but not the starter gears.

Of course the starter motor was removed prior to engine removal.

Pin from shift sector perhaps. If you have all yours compare it to them. It's entirely possible one was lost in the case before the motorcycle became yours.

It seems like this is the consensus. I also added this same post to my other active post "time for second gear repair" and that is pretty much the consensus. Thanks.

Pretty scary when you find spare parts in a machine that can rotate as fast as the venture motor can...it could do a LOT of damage....I would count the alignment pins and compare the number of the pins Yamaha put in there...

It could be a little pin that keeps the large bearings from spinning in the case. Take a look where the bearing seats in the case, if there is a hole there for a pin, you need to have a pin there.

Please explain how it could be a bearing pin. The case is not yet separated and the bearings have not been disturbed.

Thanks

It is not a bearing retainer pin, they are far smaller than size of found pin.

There are no needle bearings in block near this size.

It is a shifter pin.

Heather, you need to get a good feel for how everything works before you take the gearsets out, or at least apart. look to see how much the second gear dogs engage and also look at that fork and see if it has been scored on the tips on one side and in the "U" section on the other, as this will indicate if the fork is bent. If you have already removed the gearset's, practice putting them back in and putting the bottom half on. You will be glad you did later when you are trying to put it together when you have sealer smeared on it.
