Out for a few errands the other day and I noticed my temp gauge went down to the bottom of the scale and did not rise again when I knew the engine was at operating temperature. My first thought was the "cheap" Sunpro temp gauge I installed when I converted from the Cassette to the gauge pack.

Yesterday I installed an new "better" gauge. It was too late to test it when I finished so I waited until today for the test ride. About two miles from home where I believed the gauge should have been climbing into the normal range and the new gauge still did not move. Took about a 20 mile ride and the gauge still didn't move.

Checked the installation of the mechanical gauge and I checked that the sensor bulb had water around it by cracking the fitting loose to see water come out. At a loss as to what would cause the gauge to stay at the 100* mark (the lowest on the gauge).

Any suggestions

Thanks,

Hate to say but there aint a whole lot to go wrong I think with them. How much of a PIA to take it out. Or at least gain access to the bulb? Boil up some water in the house and place the bulb in it and see if gauge goes up. Only way I have ever "tested" them.

Thanks Dion,

I tested the old one by the boiling water trick. It didn't move. Now I have to take the new one out and try it. Hope it is bad. Easier to replace a gauge than something in the cooling system.

My Sunpro quit two years ago. Decided that Yamaha knows their business and never fixed it. Oil pressure and Volts work well. The capillary cable to the cylinder head is very sensitive to pinch.

We had a similar problem on a race car one time. Had el-cheapo type $10 gauge in there. Car owner got a "deal" on some Stewart Warner gauges from a sponsor, good deal rite? WE installed gauge pack and ran the car a couple weeks. Started one week noticing the temp was really getting high. We thought had a cooling problem, changed radiators (twice) Finally one day while sorting the worlds problems also with some cold beverages I said well heck lets check out the "old" gauge. Everything worked A OK. Turned out the capillary had gotten pinched when installing as someone ( I wont say who but they dont live with me) thought they had a better route to run the capillary. Just took awhile for it to get shorted or whatever happens to them. Unfortunately there is no way to fix them I know if.
