Yesterday I bought the RSTD I've been looking at. Riding it home I went 30 miles on the expressway to the DMV. It was hot and slow at times. 10 minutes after I stopped it didn't want to restart. I tried using the choke and even put it on reserve. After cranking a bit it started. I then put gas in it and it only took 3 gallons so reserve probably wasn't necessary. To me this sounds like it could be an issue with the petcock. I've heard of this on other bikes. The rest of the day it started fine. Any ideas on the cause?

Check the vent on the gas tank, they have been known to get plugged up and the vacuum that is created will cause fuel starvation. When you open the tank do you hear ais woosh? That would be the singn that the vent is plugged.

It is possible that the fuel pup is bad or weak. When you first turn on the key you should hear it clicking for a couple seconds. if the tank is full it can still run without the pump working, but at around a half tank the head pressure gets to low to keep supplying fuel.

Check the fuel filter.

yes should this happen again do open the tank. The swoosh is not always heard. And try to restart. do not use the choke. Also...does the RSV have a fuel pump like the original Venture ?

You should NOT hear the fuel pump when you first turn the key on unless the bike has been sitting for many hours or days. If you hear it after only a short shutdown, then it indicates a problem with your fuel supply. Either tank vent, tank screens or fuel filter.
