YamahaLarry Posted May 27, 2014 #1 Posted May 27, 2014 This is a fear that I have. I try to look in my rear view as I am sitting at a traffic light and no cars behind me, but sometimes forget. But even if you see it coming, how often could you have the ability or quick enough response to avoid getting hit. Link to article
XV1100SE Posted May 27, 2014 #2 Posted May 27, 2014 When stopped, I keep an eye out behind me and if a car is approaching I'll flash my brake lights a few times. Always in 1st at a stop and try to leave an escape especially if I'm stopped behind another vehicle.

That escape plan may be watching for holes in cross traffic or a quick lane change or worst case diving off the bike to the side. The plan may change several times during a single red light as conditions evolve. Over the last 40 years and well over 1 million miles of driving I have blown a red light twice to avoid getting rear ended. Once in a car and once on the bike. Both times I was fortunate to have a hole in cross traffic to shoot through safely. One of them, the person that caused it did not make it through clean, fortunately no one was hurt but she did look pretty silly with lipstick all over her face. Both times I had to immediately pull to the side of the road to clean out my shorts and recompose myself before I could continue driving.

Also in some situations, do the same as I am coming to a stop and the person behind me is making me a little nervous.

Last year, I suddenly hit a wall of stopped traffic on a 60+mph 4 lane highway, travelling on the inside lane. Immediately checked my mirrors and saw that a Dodge van coming up behind me had no chance of stopping in time, and I am not sure I could have myself. My escape route that time was to ride into the gap between the two lanes of stopped traffic. That left the shoulder open and the van slid by both me (as well as the car in front of me) on the gravel shoulder.

Well come on over and sit in traffic on I-696. 4 lanes wide and no place to go. Left lane you definitely want to stay out of, right lane........unless you want to do 55 in a 70 and deal with merging traffic you really do not want to be there. That leaves the center two lanes. I ride/drive that route everyday. Just a matter of time before I either bite it on the bike or get nailed in the car.

For that reason stay on the side of the lane at a light especially if you are behind cars.

But if you are sitting still and a car behind you is doing forty or fifty miles an hour by the time you realize it isn't going to stop it is probably to late. Some time ago a friend of mine was hit. He was sitting in the right hand lane behind a car waiting on a stop light. According to witnesses. A drunk doing 60+ in a 35 zone fell asleep and switched from the left lane to the right lane at the last second. My friend never saw it coming. It was a very messy affair. Mike

Yep. Me too. It is these times that I really appreciate the six horns I have on my RSV including two air horns. The reaction is always priceless. It is not always the teen girls, although they seem to be the worse. Couple years ago I watched a sheriffs deputy almost rear end stopped traffic while texting. I was stopped in opposite direction lane and watched the whole thing. I called it in later, but seriously doubt anything was done about it.

In the truck I will do that, on the bike I do not want to risk pissing off the wrong person that is having a really bad day and have them take it out on me. Even a smart car has tonnage over the bike.

sleepy2 Posted May 30, 2014 #24 Posted May 30, 2014 This brought back my experience I encountered last year at a traffic light in town where I had a lady bump into me and almost pushed me into a Corvette. I also normally always check on traffic behind me and this time I forgot. Luckily I was able to stay upright and not hit anything else and it was a slow impact. Thoughts go out to these people and their family's!
