Drewman Posted May 27, 2014 #1 Posted May 27, 2014 I just got an 89 VR and it is leaking oil on the left side of the engine and drips down on the exhaust cross over pipe. Any ideas on what to look for would be appreciated. Also what is Gen1 and Gen 2?
Drewman Posted May 27, 2014 Author #3 Posted May 27, 2014 I will take a look. Thanks for the quick reply!
Neil86 Posted May 27, 2014 #4 Posted May 27, 2014 Also what is Gen1 and Gen 2? Drewman... Gen1 is a 83-93 Venture. Gen2 is a 99-13 Venture.
MiCarl Posted May 27, 2014 #6 Posted May 27, 2014 It could also be leaking around the stator wires. Pull the rubber cover off the clutch bleed screw and have a look in there. On mine it was easier to see with the motorcycle warmed up and running.
Marcarl Posted May 27, 2014 #7 Posted May 27, 2014 Next time you do an oil change, forget about putting in the oil,,,,, problem solved!,,,,! Well that one anyways, you will experience more difficulties of a much higher degree.
paysaw Posted May 27, 2014 #8 Posted May 27, 2014 Take a pic of where the leak is and where the oil drops too.
Peder_y2k Posted May 27, 2014 #9 Posted May 27, 2014 Might also be leaking from the gear indicator sender. The o-ring may have failed. Also possible is the clutch push rod seal at the crankcase, right next to the gear indicator sender. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA

Flyinfool Posted May 27, 2014 #11 Posted May 27, 2014 I tried Amsoil in my bike last oil change. almost immediately every gasket started leaking, I am hoping that switching back to dino oil will stop some of the leaking.
86er Posted May 27, 2014 #12 Posted May 27, 2014 Drewman... Gen1 is a 83-93 Venture. Gen2 is a 99-13 Venture. Gen1 is a 83-93 Venture. . Mark I 83-85 . Mark II 86-86 Gen2 is a 99-13 Venture. . Uhhhhh..... No Differences. Same cassette player, even! Further Eclucidation! (That's what Bubba told me. He likes big words whether they are right or not!)
Venturous Randy Posted May 27, 2014 #13 Posted May 27, 2014 . Mark II 86-86 Are you trying to confuse him even more, I think you meant 86-93. RandyA
KIC Posted May 27, 2014 #14 Posted May 27, 2014 Also what is Gen1 and Gen 2? Well here is the truth of the matter: The Gen 1 is an elegant, much faster, classy riding machine. It rolls with an air of elegance. The Gen 2 is a Gen 1 wanna-be, slower, a little sportier and has that teenage know-it-all attitude...you know it thinks its better, but we all know that's not true..... My 89 is leaking in the same area... I need to wash it and find the source too. NOTE: If you find it might be the rear valve cover bolts DO NOT try to tighten them ! They are shoulder bolts and will snap off. ( ask me how I know ) Now this will open a whole area of debate, but I solved my head gasket leak with a very (read: very) thin washer placed under the top of the shoulder bolt.
Drewman Posted May 27, 2014 Author #15 Posted May 27, 2014 Thanks for all the replies. I attached two pictures - one is the left side of the engine and the other is underneath looking up where the exhaust collector used to be. Is there a website that has a breakdown of the engine on what is what. I just got this bike so looking at all the things that were suggested is a bit challenging at the moment?
Peder_y2k Posted May 27, 2014 #16 Posted May 27, 2014 This looks like fresh oil from here. If this really is fresh, then I suspect the cover gasket and/or the o-ring underneath is leaking. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
