Huggy Posted May 26, 2014 #1 Posted May 26, 2014 I'm hoping there is someone here with some industrial electrical expertise. I need a phase converter so I can run a three phase 250v 1 hp motor from a single phase 250v source. So can someone tell me what I need to look for in a phase converter. I have been given a Emco Maximat V10 P combination lathe/milling machine. It needed a new gear and my brother has already replaced it. He said I can have the machine all I have to do is come and get it!!!
bkuhr Posted May 26, 2014 #2 Posted May 26, 2014 1 to 3 phase VFD should do the trick here is a option on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/HIGH-QUALITY-3HP-2-2KW-10A-220-250V-VARIABLE-FREQUENCY-DRIVE-INVERTER-VFD-NEW-a7-/300652886556?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46004efa1c
calperin Posted May 26, 2014 #3 Posted May 26, 2014 Agree, That model should meet all your specs. Regards, Carlos
cowpuc Posted May 26, 2014 #4 Posted May 26, 2014 (edited) Might wanna check the amp load spec of the 3 phase motor that your dealing with, should be a label right on it or under the cover where you terminate the leads coming in.. Also,, if it states 10 amps I would go with a 15 amp phase converter - start up draw on a motor is only momentary but it can wreak havoc on under rated devices.. Also mount your converter in a area where it can breath a little - they can get warm.. Dont skimp to save money on wiring feeding the system, you can easily destroy the motor and converter by resistance caused by undersized wiring (or worse yet, burn your shop down).. If it were mine and it was an old machine I would find a amp probe (clamps around the wire) and double check the amp load on each leg with the motor running.. You should be able to tell what kinda shape the motor is in by checking the amp draw.. Edited May 26, 2014 by cowpuc
cowpuc Posted May 26, 2014 #5 Posted May 26, 2014 Oh yea Hugger - CONGRATS ON THE INHERITANCE OF THE LATHE/MILL!! Time to tool up brother - yeeehaaww:cool10:
Huggy Posted May 26, 2014 Author #6 Posted May 26, 2014 I have also come across a 220v single phase 1/2 hp motor for the Emco Maximat V10-P. This Motor is for the lathe on the machine. I'm thinking of buying it and watch to see if I can get a 1hp motor for the mill head. My brother cant use it because he only has a 50 amp service. He got it from the guy that is rebuilding his 1950 Harley. I don't have it home yet. It's up in Ottawa and I can't go get it till my son get back from Romania. I need his pickup truck its to big to get into a car and haul back.
