Skid Posted May 23, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2014 Can someone tell me what the nut size is on top of the steering head. The chrome one one top of Second Gens. The cotton picker isn't easy to get to. I need a box end wrench I guess and mine only goes up to one inch. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/23/5a3epepe.jpg

V7Goose Posted May 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2014 I believe a 1 1/16" open-end will fit perfectly. Just going from memory here, but I'll try to remember to check the actual wrench when I go out to the shop. Goose
IronMike Posted May 24, 2014 Share #5 Posted May 24, 2014 Yea and yea I have used both sizes, Open end, and turning the bars while finangling for a shot at it helps. My front end started showing signs of being too loose, when I went to snug it up this top nut would have fell off in my hand had it not been for the Handlebars keeping it on. Imagine that! So, i only had to tighten!
BradT Posted May 24, 2014 Share #6 Posted May 24, 2014 I believe a 1 1/16" open-end will fit perfectly. Pretty sure that is what I have as well and the open end needs to be flipped a few times, otherwise works perfect as mentioned. Brad
Carbon_One Posted May 24, 2014 Share #7 Posted May 24, 2014 That nut really doesn't tighten the steering head down. You still need to get to the steering head nuts under the top triple tree. The chrome nut on top just locks down the top tree against the steering head nuts. Thus it still has to be loosened . Larry

Skid Posted May 28, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted May 28, 2014 Got the 1 1/16 wrench today. Sure makes the job easier when you got the right tools. After that was complete, I changed the oil. Now what else can I do before taking it off the stand.
