Okay, I profess my ignorance! I thought turning the pilot screws in leaned out the idle mixture. A friend just told me the opposite. I thought it was the same as most car carbs with the exception of a Holley 4 barrel carb. Anyway, can someone please educate me and save me from my ignorance. Does turning the pilot screws in closer to the seat lean the mix or richen it? Thanks! The shop manual doesn't say how to adjust this because it comes preset and sealed.

The pilot screw adjusts a small mix of combined fuel and air flow. Turning 'in' (C-W) leans the mix, conversely turning 'out' (CC-W) enrichens the mix. This mixture functions into mid-range (around 2500-3000 RPM) and thereafter the main jet takes over all fuel mix function. When these small circuits are compromised with dirt, driveability issues arise, such as hesitation of throttle response, unstable engine acceleration at low RPM, uneven running, 'thumpy' exhaust sound, exhaust popping on decel, etc. Carb synch is also very important for proper operation.
