How do I determine what trany I have.

I have a 24 feet 1984 Ford M/H with a 460 V8. I'm concluding it is a 1 ton. What I need is to install a new trany gasket. I called my local Ford Dealer and his info no longer goes back 30 years.

I go to an auto parts store and they ask me what trany I have.

Thanks for your help.

PS: Could I just buy some gasket material and trace one from the pan? If so, what kind of gasket material should I purchase?

Hmm I would hope a C-6 on a big block, but you never know. Could be an FMX. How many gears? 3 or an overdrive? Lock up converter? See if this page helps you any. Also look under the hood if its a class C. There should be a "build tag" sticker. Should tell engine rear end type and gearing etc. I think its on the passenger side of hood when you open it.

Hi Brian

If you are talking about the pan gasket and it were mine I would probably just go get some gasket material and, like you mentioned, trace it - outer edge first, cut it out - lay it in and mark the bolt holes , cut it with some shop scissors, punch the holes with a paper bunch or leather punch if ya got one.. I think the last time I bought gasket material I bought it from Ace Hardware but most auto shops probably have it.. I would get the thicker cardboard/paper material not the paper thin stuff.. After cutting/punching the gasket I would also get some permatex #2, squeeze it between my pointer finger and thumb, put the gasket between my fingers and make a nice even smear covering both sides of the gasket material..

I would clean both surfaces, pan and tranny, with carb cleaner and a rag so they are nice and clean, lay the gasket on the clean pan surface, start all the bolts making sure they all go thru their proper holes in the gasket and than tighten em down..

If you are talking about a tranny area that the gasket is part of setting precision clearances between bearings or whatever you will almost have to locate the proper gasket for it BUT, if all it is is the pan,,,, no problem doing as above..

Hope this helps a little..

Ya know, if its leaking at the gasket to change it your going to have to drain the fluid rite? If your going that far you might look into changing the filter in it. You would get a gasket in the kit. I think the last time I got a filter kit it was $8. I just looked up a 84 ford 460 F350 PU . It aint worth $8 bucks to fool around making a gasket is it?

Thanks to All... I found this...

So, for our edification: which transmission do you have?

And I agree with djh3, replace the filter and use the gasket that comes in the kit.
