Looking for some clarification. What years was the air shock used and whaty years was the coil over shock used. Would it be feasable to replace the air shock with a good OEM coil over shock ??? Are the two shocks the same length eye to eye ??? The parts list really does not state whether you are looking at an air shock or coil over.

As far as I know they ALL had air shocks. The only difference being the Standard had to be aired up manually and the Royale had CLASS (on board compressor). There is a spring as well on all of them. The air is to assist the spring.

Maybe someone will correct me if I'm wrong..

Wiz is correct; all Ventures have air assisted shocks. All Ventures have steel springs.

The confusion is because the Standard Ventures (those without CLASS) have an internal spring and the Royales have an external spring. Why? Who knows. But all First Gen shocks will interchange; although the air delivery configuration may be problematic. For instance, one could put a shock from a Standard on a Royale, but you would have to rig a coupling to join the hose from the CLASS compressor to the hose that is on the Standard shock. As far as I can determine, the hose mounted on the shock (whether Royale or Standard) is not removable from the shock without damage.

Thanks guys, I know Yamaha has done some weird things. I guess I did not realize that the Standard shock had an internal spring. Just thinking about changing mine. Anybody have a Progressive to sell ??? Is there any other option for rear shocks. Mike
