Phoneman1981 Posted May 16, 2014 #1 Posted May 16, 2014 Hello: A local friend misplaced his only ignition key for his 98 RSTC. Any suggestions?? Is there a key code stamped somewhere?
Wizard765 Posted May 16, 2014 #2 Posted May 16, 2014 I'm thinking there is a serial number that you can take to a dealer and have a new key made. failing that if you get a blank from the dealer a good locksmith can make you a new one on site
Bubber Posted May 16, 2014 #3 Posted May 16, 2014 look under the cap for a 4 digit number, slide the cover over and look underneath. Why would you have only one key? keep one in wallet keep one on the bike make the wife/girlfriend carry one.
Phoneman1981 Posted May 16, 2014 Author #4 Posted May 16, 2014 New owner of 98 RSTC. Purchased from private owner. Only had the bike two weeks but failed to have spares made. Kicking himself. He asked me because he has heard my brag about how helpful the members of this site are.
XV1100SE Posted May 16, 2014 #5 Posted May 16, 2014 I would think even taking the VIN to a dealer they could look it up and cut a couple Yamaha keys
djh3 Posted May 16, 2014 #6 Posted May 16, 2014 Just last week someone had been saying they could make keys for the RSV. So I would imagine he could make a key for this one also. Well found this in a thread. Check this thread out. A member here Heartbeat seems to know quite a bit about key problems.
M61A1MECH Posted May 16, 2014 #7 Posted May 16, 2014 Bubba, first question is , how would he get the cap off if he does not have a key? Second, the number under the cap has nothing to do with the key code. The vin number will not get you a key code, if it did every car or bike would be fair game to all the crooks. Best bet is a good locksmith that can make a key or use a jiggler key to unlock the gas cap and then remove the guts and "read" the tumblers. Always have a spare some where or the key code written down, but he knows that lesson now.
Flyinfool Posted May 16, 2014 #8 Posted May 16, 2014 There is always the ignition bypass that many install for when the ignition switch fails to at least get the bike running till it is out of gas. But this will not help to get gas in the tank.

It didn't work on mine but many slide the key flap on the gas cap over abd put a mirror under our to read the code
IronMike Posted May 16, 2014 #10 Posted May 16, 2014 One key in the ignition. One in pocket. One in bag for a passenger. One bidder requiring tools to get at on bike and the key code nodded tools required to see. That's my policy. I have no idea if this is right but think the serial number will do you no good. Otherwise anyone can get it while you are parked and have a key made. You have to have the key code or have new locks made or keys made to locks. Its a nightmare. These are stamped keys not cut.
RedRider Posted May 16, 2014 #11 Posted May 16, 2014 IIRC, the key code is also on the underside of the ignition switch housing. It's a piece of work to get to it, but .... RR
billmac Posted May 16, 2014 #12 Posted May 16, 2014 Can take off the helmet lock and have a locksmith make one from that.
Phoneman1981 Posted May 16, 2014 Author #13 Posted May 16, 2014 Good news. My friend finally found his misplaced key. He really appreciated all of the input from everyone. He indicated he was heading to a locksmith for spares. Thanks everyone.
Phoneman1981 Posted May 16, 2014 Author #15 Posted May 16, 2014 No. But you made me laugh. I have carried spares for years. Lost a key in Sturgis a few years ago. My hidden spare saved me from being embarrassed.
Neil86 Posted May 17, 2014 #16 Posted May 17, 2014 For those with a 1st gen... On my 86...I still have the original keys.....there is a number stamped on the key shank just below the black plastic head, that I believe is the key code.... An A followed by 5 digits.....
Globewalker Posted May 17, 2014 #17 Posted May 17, 2014 keep a spare laced into one of my boots.. as long as i don't lose my boots also ..I'll be ok
cowpuc Posted May 17, 2014 #18 Posted May 17, 2014 keep a spare laced into one of my boots.. as long as i don't lose my boots also ..I'll be ok I always keep mine on a wire wrapped around the neck of the coolant bottle under the Fairing Cover on the left side of my 83's... Well,,, there ya go guys,,, the last secret that I had in life:rotf: Oh yea,,, if your prone to stealin and ya decide your gonna steal my bike now,, for your safety you should let me know ahead of time cause there are some "things" about Tweeks you should be aware of BEFORE you pull out onto the road with her:rotf:
