I recently installed driving lamps and had the front fairing off - all looked fine.

Today I was installing a baggersheild windsheild and had to loosen up the bolts holding the face of the fairing on. When I did I heard parts faling off the inside - turns out it was the plastic that holds the metal tabs that the screws go into. Only 2 are left in tack - the other are all cracked up and useless. I am trying to crazy glue them back so I can re-attach the fairing. Not sure what happened - looks like they just rotted - broken into peices. They weren't too tight - i used a bit of loctite but just a dab. If I cannot get it back on securely the fairing is useless and I canot ride. I took 2 days off work as it's the first warm temps we have had this spring. Can I buy a replacement front fairing from Yamaha? Anyone know where to get one? I can get it painted to match the bike.

Dough man thats a tough lesson. No locktight on anything plastic. Now I was reading a post on here a few days back a fellow was repairng his fairing for simular fastener problems. There is a glue out there you can use. SO maybe you can glue them back in place and tap them out or something. I would suspect buying the front fairing may be cheaper to buy the bike. Over $1100 USD from what I just found.

If repairs fail you can buy factory painted fairings from mother Yamaha. Just look up the year and color you have to get the proper matching paint or let a dealer look up the part numbers.:080402gudl_prv:

Locktite = cracked ABS. I know this from experience too.

Do not try to ride with the windscreen not attached correctly. It WILL come loose and smack you hard in the face if speeds are high when it happens.

Check ebay for a fairing.

Because the plastic is all ABS... use an ABS cement. I had a broken tab in my lower cowling and Crazy Glue didn't hold as well as ABS cement.

For repairs... if the tab is reasonably intact then you can use abs cement to put it back in place. Some abs cement pushed into cracks will strengthen it. For filling in missing parts you can get some abs pipe from a hardware store and either shave or sand it to mix in with abs cement - making more of a putty - to fill in the gaps.

If you've used loctite anywhere else on the bike, you should inspect plastic in the area. Even the fumes from loctite will eat away the abs.

Thanks for the advice and help guys.

I used " advanced " formula crazy glue last night and some glue sticks to get some of the tabs back in place. I'm still missing 3 that are pretty much gone and have to be rebuilt completely. I rode today for 5 hours and it seems to be holding but I know it's only a temp fix. I like the JB weld stuff - that seems like an option.

I was think about fibregalss to build up the tabs that are now gone. Will fibreglass adhere to the ABS fairing? I can't beleive it did that much damage with so little on the ends of the nuts. I am pissed for not reading the darn label - I did today - than I burned the tube and cursed it to hell :(

lessen learned the hard way. I only bought it recently to use on the handlebar end weights and I thought - that worked well and put some on the fairing. I guess better I found the problem in the garage than 200km from home !

Anyhow the baggersheild is a great sheild - it is wider that stock and today at only +8 degrees celcius (icebergs are just off shore) I used the clear top part and it kept the wind off of us both nicely.

I did try a quick run with just the bottom portion and I like that also - it should be nice when it warms up. Had 2 bugs splatter on the winsheild. Spring is here - it's pathetic :(
