It's impossible to notice that this site is saturated with owners of older bikes that are in great condition.

 

I was wondering...are there tips that any of you could share for keeping bikes looking and running great for years to come?

Yep.....Leave the 1st Gens in de garage where they won't break down on the road or lose Tupperware parts....:rotf:

2nd Gens will run till the asphalt wears out....and lose no parts.

hey we may lose a screw or two on the way but at least we get where we are going within this century

 

though really its a matter of get handy with a scrub brush and keep up with the maintenance and don't skimp on the parts! buy the good stuff

Well,,, "looks" arent even on my radar with these old beater Yams that are my riders,, I will defer a response on that to folks who know that side of em better.. I have bought and sold bikes for years (clean and shine is a big part of resale).. Its funny but when ya do something for a living the last thing you want to do is do the same thing when your suppose to be having fun.... I will say this,,, I have used a LOT of Pledge on everything but seats and tires throughout the years..

Great running,, long life,, hmmmm,, I would say, besides normal fluid change maintenance and keeping up on high wear items - brakes, tires, wheel bearings.. Dropping in some good progressive springs to save wear on the forks/seals and keeping good fork oil in them (they come stock with fish oil ya know)...

The main thing I can think of is keeping track of air leaks in fuel management, carb diaphrams and carb syncing.. Lean conditions can destroy a motor, carb issues can cause all kinds of funny vibrations, imbalances, low performance and are generally not good for an engine......

Store indoors, Seafoam, gas stabilizer if your bike sits for long periods of time, Detail cleaning with a toothbrush and most of all don't let it fall over on the plastic.:soapbox:..... Did I miss anything.

 

As far as the rider goes, I advocate a lot of regular sex. That keeps you young at heart, body and spirit.

Ive rode in rain and winter for over 20 years. It does not hurt anything to speak of. But to get an edge, WD 40 is great, Use a bit of blue threadlocker on every nut and bolt I think it keeps the moisture out of the threads making maintenance easier.

 

Don't power wash it, or know it well enough to avoid key areas.

 

In the winter I spray it with WD 40 in a lot of places and coat the bottom with Fogging oil. I have used some type of temporary paint for protection too, they sell it to spray the front of your car.

 

But just the rain will basically do nothing. I have ridden in total downpours and have seen nothing happen because of it. I just wipe it dry with a micro fiber cloth.

 

Now on my Roadstar I went to an aftermarket Air cleaner box (K&N) and in some rain I found out it was not rain proof like the factory one. was. So I switched back. The soaked filter gave me about 1/4 throttle.

Are you nuts? You've been hanging with pygmies for way too long. Have you ever run your 2d gen against a 1st anyway.
