Great old cars we have owned

We have several threads about the bikes we have or had. We had a little cross chat on another thread about some great old cars we have owned. So let's put them here!

 

All you BOW TIE guys can post also even if you didn't own a great old car (FORD).

 

Having said that my all time favorite cars were my 72 Oldsmobile Cutlass S 350CID 4bbl dual exhaust and my 73 Lincoln MK4 460CID.

 

I think the Olds had the edge in handling and 0-60mph but the MK4 HD it in comfort and time to 100MPH.

Both of, them were, Green with Green Leather/vinyl interiors.

 

The car that was the most fun to drive and got the most ooooohhhs and aaaahs was my 65 mustang coupe. It was painted 64 Lincoln gray from the factory 289 2bbl with C4 and a posit. I upgraded it to dual exhaust and dropped a Stealth 5.0 HO under the hood painted gold and black like the 2bbl original motor with that ridiculous looking 20" air cleaner they had back then. Added a rebuilt C4 with a "K" code vacuum unit. I had a car that would spin the tires in three gears!!!! But it was noisy hot and uncomfortable!

My first car was a 1947 Chevrolet Coupe It's the blue one in the pictures, I would say my favorite was my 72 Dart limited edition no pics

My '58 Belair Hardtop with the 283 that I drove to the junk yard

My 57 Dodge D500 Hemi. Man that was fast!

My '53 Hudson Hornet that was a virtual tank and could legally fit 4 in the front! I could sleep in it comfortably!

My '66 Ford galaxy convertible with the 390 in it. Many good memories!

My '72 Mustang Grande, the Captain America version. Drove the HE!! out of it!

My '76 Plymouth Road Runner, a sleeper!

My '98 Monte, what a cruiser!

My '02 Intrepid R/T, fully loaded! Another great road car!

 

There have been many many more I have owned since 1964 but those are the most memorable...

I had a 1953 Jaguar XK120M Coupe, with the 'Red Head' big valve motor, British Racing Green with white wire knock-off wheels. That car was FUN...blew the doors off an early TransAM 400 among other 'thought they were in a fast car' types. Easily cruised the superslab at 150mph, and one time trip Tacoma to Vancouver B.C. in 90 minutes......with my mother in the pass seat, and she had the speedo in front of her. She kept asking if we were going too fast and I replied the speedo was wrong (it wasn't). Nother episode had me passing a State Patrol car going opposite direction at night going almost full throttle at 140mph and watched it make a 'u' turn to chase. I pulled over and waited as I recognized their radio was faster than my car. When the patrolman pulled up, he wanted only to learn about the car and look at the engine. Had to write me a ticket for something, so wrote a warning for loud pipes. I was shaking in my boots as I thought I was going to jail!!!

 

Finally got tired of looking at it and swapped for a black '58 Vette with '65 350hp 327 and posi, muncie 4-speed, and boy could that burn rubber and go fast!!!!. It rather alarmed me that it couldn't hold the road like my Jag, and it tried to kill me, so I sold it to someone that it did kill. Read about it in the papers. The car was totalled. It was sold for enough $$$ that I could pay to finish my final 2 yrs. of college. All the rest of my my cars have been quite pedestrian.

Way to go Bay,, this will be a blast (really cool responses already!!).

In order of ownership, by NO means an exhaustive list for me either (owned a LOT of junkers as a kid)..

1st car, 65 Ford Fairlane Wagon, smoked tranny rolling backwards down a hill and droppin into drive tryin to smoke the tires

Rusted out ol Merc Comet, 260 V-8 3 speed on the floor,, had no floorboards - was a riot to drive..

67 Cougar Dark Green black Vinyl top, 289, 4 speed, cammed up, LOVE its hide away headlights and rear sequencial turn signals..

1970 Mach 1 Fastback, 351 Cleveland, 4 speed, Dark Green/Black stripes, factory "fake" scoop on hood with "351" on emblem on it, full gauges, headers/sidepipes, Cragors w/L60's rear, slots in front, traction bars, "Night Fever" airbrushed on rear quarter panels,,,, chick magnet - fun car!

FUNNEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED WAS:

Bought in 76 a 1974 Jeep CJ5, 258 6, 3 speed, chick was trading it in at a local Jeep Dealership for a new one, overheard a conversation between her and the salesman about her trading it in, he went inside for a second and I walked over and told her I would give her cash for her Jeep in the exact amount they were giving her for trade in.. Told her than to take the CASH and apply it toward her purchase of the new one and she would get a better deal on the new one.. Told her to call her Dad and ask him.. She did, I bought it on the spot!! She CRIED when I picked it up, was her BABY! It had just under 20k on it, BONE STOCK.. Thing had NEVER been off road!! Got 18 mpg stock,, than I started on it..

Put "6=8" Split Headers on it, removed stock single barrel (crazy thing had the float bowl mounted toward the front of the vehicle - everytime ya hit a hill at speed it would flood the carb) and intake (on these the intake and exhaust manifold were one piece) and went to the junk yard and scavenged an intake off a 258 ford motor that was separate from the exhaust manifold.. Stuck the coolest little 2 barrel on it you ever saw!!

Out a mild street cam in it. Bought a set of 10" wide Chromies for it and stuck a set of 14" wide white letter Goodyear Wranglers on it (not real tall - only added 2" to body lift).. ALso ran Gabriel Highjacker air shocks... In the end it got EXACTLY the same fuel economy that it did as a stock rig..

I had it in water so deep a creek was flowing over the door rails and out the other side, it would FLY in the dunes, pulled more harvested deer out of the woods than I can remember, can still hear the screams of friends standing on the rear seat holding on to the roll bar for dear life, loved the sound of the motor winding up and still miss the flapping of the rag top with the doors off cruising around on a rainy summer nite..

 

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Several 283 Chevy's (couple wagons included) that got me thru some very financially hard high school years.. Bought as junk/purchased for 20 bucks each (at different time) - all with bad cam lobes that operated the fuel pump.. All got the same treatment, an electric fuel pump that I kept around for just the occasion, and I rodded the last moments of life out them,, destroyed them, took em to the junk yard and got my money back for the next one.. :rotf::rotf:

Most of my cars were pretty tame compared to some of yours. Here they are in order though from when I first got my license at 16. There have been MANY more since these.

 

1959 Chevy Bel Air 235 6 cylinder with 3 speed on the column.

 

1969 VW Beetle with semi-auto transmission and factory air.

 

1966 Pontiac Lemans with 326 and automatic.

 

1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454. First new car and I bought it when I graduated from high school.

 

After that, there have been many many many cars. Everything from 1969 Camaros to early 70's Dodge Challengers to Triumph Spitfires and a lot of trucks and SUVs.

Ummmmmm,,,, ya know Don,, even though that Chevelle was after the Yenko years and already into the "detune to the moon" years for Chevy,, it WAS a big block and,, ahhhhhhh,,, alot of us never really considered a Chevelle 454 SS as "tame" :rotf:

My first and favorite was a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 350 Hp with a muncie M21. Had that car for almost 10 years and always had a blast driving it. Had 3.31 posi so it was quick off the line but when that big block got going, it would go..

77 Chevy Malibu Classic. Drove it through high school in the early 80s. I was kinda hard on it, wish I still had it. Dont know if I have any pics either.

My current "olDodges". 1969 Dodge Dart GT and 1941 Dodge Business Coupe.

 

That business coupe looks like it "could" be a mid-engine. The hind quarters look significantly longer than the front.

 

I had a 1965 Plymouth "Fury" with 383 Magnum - Game Warden car. Looked like the one below.

I also had a 1968 Saab 96 Wagon with a V4 a silly 200 cubic centimeters bigger than a Gen 1.2 and four on the column.

The tranny could run faster than the engine "free-wheeling". It looked like the one below.

No pics but, in the following order...

 

1952 Merc 4dr. That was in 1964. It was a "fill 'er up with oil and check the gas". Paid $20 for it and rolled it 6 months after I got it.

 

1951 Chev 4dr. Blew a con rod in that one and continued to drive it... made a he!! of a racket LOL ... didn't last long.

 

1953 Ford Custom 4dr. Got that one around 1967. Got drunk and nailed another car in an intersection. Lost my licence and spent a couple weeks in the hoosegow.

 

1955 Ford Custom. Had that for a month and traded it back to original owner for a 1955 Merc.

 

1955 Merc. Drove that from Sudbury, ON to Vancouver, BC on siphoned gas LOL. Tranny went out in Van so it went to the junkyard. That was 1968.

 

1958 Chev Impala convertible with 348 engine. Coolest car I've ever owned.

least favorite, inherited 70' red Pinto later in life from motherinlaw. Might have come in second last if the 1st Gen AM/FM cassette had been an option .
