..and I need you guys to have my back....

I have finally decided to undertake the removal of my rear tire for replacement...that means also lubing all the final drive stuff... I have printed off all the prior threads and hope it goes smooth....:shock3:

I am also ..WHILE I AM IN THERE.... going to change out the plug wires and replace my carb diaphragms .....

SO... as I run into the unforeseen problems.. I will need the love and expertise :sun:from you Venture gurus...

My first question is when replacing the plug wires, how do I get the wire screwed into the coil end ? There was only a screw cap on the end that I took off and when I tried screwing it back on the wire just pulled out.

Also, any tricks to getting to the back two coils ? It looks like up under the fairing is the way to go, but I don't have to take the fairing apart do I ? Please say no ... please say no ...please say no...

When I took the plug cap end apart, there was no ball bearing that I thought I had read about, only a spring thing with a white thing and two very, very tiny tiny brass looking things that went on each end of the white thing... (picture below...)

Been so long since I been in there I'm not sure about pieces. I used the wire on E-Bay with the plug ends already on them. When you put them in coils take a sharp knife and cut a X across the end of them to help getting them on post.

Put pieces back the way they flew out of there....:duck::rotfl:

Trying to keep track of how, and what order, things are coming apart...:shock3:

Finally removed the rear tire...PIA trying to get it past the piece that holds the rear caliper on. Finally got it past. Then I found out the new tire I got with the 87 is the front tire.. The new rear tire is on the 87 Ugh.... good news is I get a new front tire on since the front is already off..bad news is I am now rear tire hunting.. :detective:

Something just isn't right with the plug connectors...wondering if that is/was part of my problem with gas mileage and performance..:confused24:

The coil wires can be replaced from the front, but you'll need small hands. Keep in mind that the front coils go to the front cylinders, so far so easy. Remove the front wires so that you can get access to the rear coils,(like I said, you'll need small hands, if you have large grabbers you'll have to remove the inner farings), do the rears first and then the fronts. Each coil has a screw cap with a special O-ring in it. It's not just any O-ring and any O-ring won't do, this one has a special shape, different on both sides, one is rounder the other is more flat, these, when tightened hold and seal the wire in place. If you don't have the O-rings, the wire won't stay in, and if you have the O-ring in properly, you need to squeeze the screw cap a little tighter.

So far the first one I removed doesn't have an o-ring. It will be interesting to see if the others have it. I guess I will take some off the 87 and see what it has. Are the o-rings a special Venture part, or do you think they are readily available at a parts place ?

Check the cap as it might have remained in it.

I removed the battery and its holder and that allowed easier access to the rear coils on my 89.

I ordered my wire and caps from Dennis Kirk as they sell the nonresistor wire.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks, there wasn't anything in the cap. I did remove the battery and can get to the front..the rear are another story.

Since my new rear tire is on my non-running 87, which is already loaded on my bike trailer, I have decided to take it over to my dad's and use his tractor to lift the rear up and swap rear rims quickly. :shock3:

I will also check the 87 for the correct wire ends.
