dave_wells Posted May 11, 2014 #1 Posted May 11, 2014 I have read up on the whine It the gears and the RPM's I get that .... I would like to know 1- if anyone has replaced the basket and noticed an improvement 2- if so Would you have a part Number -- I did find out the part number is different from the 2000 model basket than the new part That has me wondering if an improvement was made 3- Anyone in the Columbus Ohio area able to give me some guidance while doing the swap I don't understand the--->>> I in the I basket I could use any help I can get at this point Back story.. Bought an 2000 Venture last may it had 28,000 miles on it I put 10,000 on it since The whine is there and very loud - unbearable even worse later when the motor is hot By the end of the day i just want to park it I have tried a few types of oil no difference Drove down to NC and back last week It screamed the whole way Parked it when I got home and told Robin that is where it stays I'm done with it I have an RSTD I enjoy so I can still get out for a ride I don't feel right selling it the Venture to someone and making it someone else's problem That is just not me My thoughts are : just part it out and take the loss Keeping the fairing tour pack and electronics and putting them on my RSTD Having it all painted to match I just do not enjoy riding it Cranking up the tunes and or putting load pipes is not a choice for me I do own a 2006 RSTD it has a whine barely noticeable I run the Yama Lube 20/50 semi synthetic started that at 5000 miles At 50,000 still barely hear it Help !!!!
Cougar Posted May 11, 2014 #2 Posted May 11, 2014 (edited) -I also have a 2000. -I also have change out the basket with different letters over the years. (5 times) -Changing to an (I)basket will move the (whine) to different rpm level. -I went back to a Dino oil and that helps, synthetic will make the (whine) louder. -If you install a TAC on your bike and always keep the RPM's above 3K rpm there will be no whine with a (I) basket. -Most likely with the 2000 RSV you have a (F) basket installed. Feel free to contact me if you want to talk more about this, I have been dealing with this for 7 years now. but it grows on you Edited May 11, 2014 by Cougar
bongobobny Posted May 11, 2014 #3 Posted May 11, 2014 Awww, you don't like the George Jetson sound?!!? I've grown to just accept it, Sexi chirps when she's happy...
Cougar Posted May 11, 2014 #4 Posted May 11, 2014 This is a (F) basket marking... so you know what to look for.
djh3 Posted May 11, 2014 #5 Posted May 11, 2014 I think maybe part of the reason you think you dont hear it as much on the TD is because of the faring maybe reflecting the sound back in a different way than the windshield does. A new clutch basket may take the whine away for awhile, but I suspect once it gets work its back. Possibly the only way to eliminate it is change out the basket and the drive gear that mates to it in the trans. I have no idea what that would incorporate.
darthandy Posted May 12, 2014 #7 Posted May 12, 2014 Some members say they've had a reduction in the sound by changing to a different brand of oil so you could give that a shot. Mine (a 2000) was bad at first but started dropping in volume last fall and so far this spring, the noise has been more of a minor background thing than the loud whine it had before. It seems to change with accumulated mileage, so maybe putting more mileage on could help. At least it's another good excuse for getting out to ride. Andy
V7Goose Posted May 12, 2014 #8 Posted May 12, 2014 As you know, not all of these engines have this problem. Even more importantly, there is no universal fix, such as a basket "x". What works on one engine often has no discernible effect on another. But since you already own two of these engines, why not try simply swapping the clutch baskets to see what happens on each? Not that hard to do, and it won't cost you a thing except maybe a couple of gaskets. Goose
dave_wells Posted May 13, 2014 Author #9 Posted May 13, 2014 I appreciate the feed back I know this subject has been brought up plenty of times I was kinda hoping someone put part x in and it worked If the bike is running hot , do you think that may contribute to the noise Thinning out the oil due to heat I do notice the Venture run way hotter that the RSTD Fan run way more Some one mentioned synthetic oils make it worse Trying a few different mostly synthetic oils did not work I think today I may go get some Yama lube 20/50 Something with some weight to it As someone mentioned Swap the basket from my RSTD and see what happen Thought about that , My issue was Any problems with the swap that leaves me with two non working motorcycles I am no mechanic but i try I do as much as I can on these Anyone in the Columbus area wants to guide me I don't have a problem tearing into it
XV1100SE Posted May 13, 2014 #10 Posted May 13, 2014 ....I do notice the Venture run way hotter that the RSTD Fan run way more Some one mentioned synthetic oils make it worse Trying a few different mostly synthetic oils did not work I think today I may go get some Yama lube 20/50 Something with some weight to it As someone mentioned Swap the basket from my RSTD and see what happen.... When was the coolant changed last on the Venture ? That might help. Could be your thermostat too. 1AE-12410-00 thermostat assy (parts catalogue - 05:water pump - item 26) As for synthetic oils... have you tried Rotella T6 ? Swapping the RSTD clutch basket - from what I've read, the letter on the basket changed pretty much every year. The "I" basket probably started with the 2008 models. Your RSTD is older than that so you'll probably find it is a "G" (or somewhere around there). Don't think swapping the two will do the trick.

I purchased the bike last May I changed the coolant along with all fluids It has been 10,000 miles If the thermostat is not that hard to replace I may just do that Found one on amazon its about 50 dollars with shipping One of the oils I did try was Rotella 15-40 I am currently running with - Red Line Synthetic 20w50 Motorcycle Oil
XV1100SE Posted May 13, 2014 #12 Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) Rotella T6 is a 5W-40 full synthetic. Rotella T is probably the 15W-40 you tried and I don't believe it is synthetic. Yamaha lists 20W-50 above 5C/40F and 10W-40 below 15C/60F Walmart (U.S.) lists T6 for $21 ($43 in Canada - can you believe that !) It won't fix your whine though. Best to try the "I" basket. 37 bell Posted May 13, 2014 #13 Posted May 13, 2014 I have a 2006 RSV the whine come in at about 35000 and was pretty bad. Iput a H clutch basket in and no whine as for now with 86000 miles on it. I don"t know if it will work on your but it worked on mine.
XV1100SE Posted May 13, 2014 #14 Posted May 13, 2014 Did a search in the forum and a couple things/posts stood out : => "improperly installed spacers in the final drive housing. Mine was found to have this issue. The tech pulled mine apart, found the grommets that hold the spacers were not seated correctly, liberally lubed everything and put it all back together." => related to "chirping" => "clean and lube the rear drive pins and one more thing that isn't usually done... align the rear axle by shimming the diff to left swingarm connection. Another member had his RSV in to a dealer and the tech had done this and I had wanted to try it. There is a bulletin HERE (http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=15576&postcount=1) on how to align the rear axle but at the point where it's aligned but before you tighten the 4 acorn nuts I measured the gap and made a shim. Otherwise, when you tighten the nuts it pulls the entire wheel/diff assembly to the left and puts it in a bind. Mine had almost a .040" gap. I can't say for sure the shimming fixed or helped the noise but it was all gone when I was done. May be worth the effort for someone else to try."
dave_wells Posted May 18, 2014 Author #15 Posted May 18, 2014 As I mentioned I think the bike runs hot sooooo.... Today I took the time to remove the thermostat housing That was fun I am so looking forward to doing it the RSTD The coolant looks fine I need thermostat a few post here mention napa. #156 Is this current I plan to try to put back together Monday or Tuesday A part number ?
