Yes, of course we have room and you are welcome. Perhaps we can meet and have coffee also.

 

At the moment there is not a lot to post since I have been "On Project" (working) for the last 2 weeks and the next 2 weeks. When I have a project going on, I focus my time and energy on that. Gotta make a livin'! When I'm in between, then I can redirect my attention and energy to "Secretariat" (Big Red). And believe you me, I am very anxious to get back on it!

You may want to check the water pump and see if it still has the plastic impeller. Yamaha changed it to a metal impeller on the later bikes. Many years ago, I did the 2nd gear rebuild on my 83, and when I took the water pump apart, the impeller had a big crack in it and was close to breaking free from the shaft. Also, the water pump seals do go bad, so it's time to replace the seals even if the impeller is already metal.

Yesterday I completed a project at work and I will again pick up where I left off. When I am "earning a living" I don't get involved with the motorcycle. but... I'm baaaack!

Yes Frank, the impeller has been replaced with the metal one. Thanks for the reminder.

 

I have also purchased approximately 80 individual parts. Mostly gaskets, o-rings, circlips, and any other "wearable parts" that are accessible during the second gear repair. I was surprised at how many little things there are to replace when you remove the transmission. They have all arrived and I have separated all of the parts according to the parts breakdown, so that as I begin reassembling, everything will be organised and waiting to be installed/replaced in the proper sequence.

 

I have also:

 

 

1. Changed out the fuse box with an 8 position ATM fuse box.

2. Lowered the battery box about 3/8". I hope it will allow enough room for the taller ATM fuse box with cover.

3. Have the newer type of shift segment and pins.

4. Miscellaneous repairs, cleaning and polishing

5. Removing the baffles in the "rattle trap" exhaust chamber and having it rewelded.

6. Made several wiring repairs/up-grades.

It's a done deal!

 

16 quad-rex screws 65 mm long (approx 2.5"). It actually works quite well. The thrust washer and retainers were amazingly easy to change.

I sure hope it's not just nails holding the top and bottom plate on. I have my fingers crossed!

I'm starting the reassembly. I have watched and absorbed Damon's "Vmax Engine Assembly" video.

 

Damon prefers Yamabond 5, but my local Yamaha/Honda/Kaw dealer carries Honda-Bond 4.

 

Any preference or opinion? The mechanics there say that is what they use.

 

What scares me though, is that I find Honda to be like a pair of "Sensible Shoes"

... If I use the Honda stuff will it make my bike run slower?:rotf:

 

Seriously though, is Honda-Bond 4 OK?

It doesn't take a thick coat of this to work. Excess will be squeezed out and end up inside case.

 

Also need to stop slightly short of bearings. Damon covers this in video.

Yep. that's mentioned pretty frequently. The mech at the Yamaha shop actually demonstrated how to spread it.

 

BTW at this shop there are two longtime mechanics 35yrs and 25yrs at that shop. Both are quite knowledgeable about Ventures and Vmaxes. So they are also a pretty good help. I just hate to take up very much of their time.

 

Honda bond is fine. I used it on Tweety & Hybrid.

These screws go in the drive pinion gear stopper. I had to beat the stew out of them to get them out. 2of which i had to dremmel the screw where it had been staked. These appear to be no longer available. Can I just use ss Allen or would it be better to reuse these and just make sure the position is coducive to a good strong ”stake"?http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/16/ru9e2eby.jpg
