There is a green wire with a resistor in a plastic tube and a skinny red connector on the end. 86 venture royal. Right now the red connector is loose and I can't see where it goes to. MiCarl Posted May 11, 2014 #2 Posted May 11, 2014 That isn't a red connector. It's a probe that is inserted into the battery to sense the electrolyte level. It can only be used with a flooded type battery that has a seventh hole in the top to insert it into. If you use any other type of battery you need to bypass it or the CMS will constantly show a battery warning.

Jayceesfolly Posted May 11, 2014 #4 Posted May 11, 2014 Be very careful how you bypass this connector. Doing it wrong or with the wrong voltage will short out your CMU (computer)!!! Thank you I think you'll find that there is a broad range of them that will work. So long as the CMS sees any voltage on that lead it is happy. The purpose of the resistor is to make sure you don't run too much current through the CMS. You cannot hurt anything by going too high. When I did mine I pulled out my fingers and toes and calculate what the maximum current might flow through that resistor in the wire. Then I back tracked to calculate the resistance at 12V. Then I rounded up. I think I ended up at 10K, and it works fine.

Thank youI picked up the 1.2K and the 2.2K one worked the other did not I just can't remember which one worked. but no harm resulted in trying one and than the other. I am actually going to take it one step further. instead of wiring directly to the battery I plan to run it through a micro switch. The microswitch will be set up so the battery light is on whenever I leave my choke on, going out when I move my choke into the normal run position. I have a tendency to forget when i have the choke on. I like that idea, I'm gonna steal it. I don't know how many times I have ridden from home to work or work to home with the choke on the whole way.
