So in attempts to cure my decel pop, I am going to remove the exhaust, look for leaks and I also have to repair the left pipe,as the muffler just rotted off. I have the gaskets and tools. Btw the popping its coming from the right side on decel.

So I need to know it's removing the exhaust straight forward or will I need to remove much more? Radiator? Faux fins? Lowers and air boxes?

Hopefully this will cure my poping on decel. While I'm in there I will also be removing the Ais entirely. The front unit is removed by the PO or his shop but doesn't look like they did the job correctly

So some pictures and a little description of where and how severe the exhaust is rotted would help. Or did you order exhaust from the head back? If just swapping muffler I see no need to take the head pipes off unless you know you have a leak there. It should be pretty obvious. You can take a piece of paper maybe an inch wide, while bike is running and hold it in and around the connection to the head and pipe. If there is exhaust escaping it should blow the paper. Also I would think you would see some graying at the leak site.

The popping could be a couple things. AIS, ignition timing (which there isnt alot you can do for it) or exhaust leak, possibly carb sync. Basicly you are getting unburned exhaust gases hot enough to burn after the gas is in the pipe. Now weather its because the oxygen level has increased or the fuel in the mixture has its hard to tell. But usually I think its the oxygen. Thats what the AIS does if I remember rite, put O2 in the exhaust to pass emissions.

If its just the mufflers rusted off, throw a set of Road Kings on there for cheap, say you should be able to find a pair for under $60.

The muffler didn't rot , the pipe did. I still have pipe in the muffler. I have a set of harley mufflers if I find out the yamys are no good but I still need to extend the pipe the amount that is sick in the muffler. I bought header gaskets already . I want to eliminate the exhaust from the equation. Carbs synched and clean mixture screws have no effect on popping.

Only on the right side , on heavy decel.

I had the same problem with my first 99. I picked up a used exhaust system from Pinwall cycle parts for a couple hundred bucks and replaced both Y pipes. From what I remember you probably can't fix the old pipes. It is a pretty straight forward procedure to remove the exhaust system.

Been there done that, take apart and back is ok to do but very unlikely to fix backfire from right pipe...IMHO.

Carb idle screws out a turn and a half further and re sync the carbs. No backfire.

Just saying what worked on mine.

Not sure on front header pipe but removing from rear header pipes to to the Y and back is no problem. Check the Y for pin holes around the weld joints.

Here we go. The rear header pipe slid out of the exhaust system as I was repairing the muffler that rotted off of the exhaust system. I realized that the clamp was not tight enough. Gave the left side(popping side) another crank to tighten and no more popping.

Most auto repair shops have smoke checkers which make checking for leaks in motorcycle exhausts very fast and easy. Make friends with an automobile mechanic.
