Eck Posted May 6, 2014 #1 Posted May 6, 2014 Well, it may work as the guy designed it, (see attached pic), but the first thing I see is a very unsafe condition that could cause one heck of a "pinch" if you ever got the section of skin between your thumb and first finger caught in the gears that are so broadly exposed. The guy needs to add a small guard / cover over the gear section even if it is a clear plastic guard. Man can you imagine doing 50MPH and get your hand caught in that gear, and just by common reaction, you quickly yank on your hand to get it out of there and at the same time the handle bars rip in the direction you yanked your hand. Just think of the instant chaos you would be in. Hell, I can already feel the pain in my hand (which is minor) compared to the pain located in many other places (knees, shoulders, ribs) caused from the wreck I just had. Other than that, it looks very ingenious, nice machining, and I'm sure it works great. I like the brake lever also.. That is different. He drilled three locations and installed chrome allen head screws just for looks. The bar is solid so other than for looks or maybe a better grip I see no other purpose for the screws from this angle anyway. I would also have to either chrome (or paint) the handle bar to hide that weld around the cable bracket. A project still in works.

Gotta go with ya on it though Eck,, I too am rubbing that skin betwix my thumb and pointer finger,, THAT would hurt when (not if) it got caught in that gearset - OUCH.. ANd your right,, aint no way you could think quick enough to not be in real trouble as you jerked to release yourself.. DEFINITLY needs a neat little guard!! Down right COOL though!! Good post!!

dingy Posted May 7, 2014 #4 Posted May 7, 2014 From an engineering point of view the cable is at a less than desirable angle as it exits the sheath. Will wear strands rather quickly on inner cable. But give the guy some credit Eck, surely it is a work in progress. Did take some design & machining skills to make. Gary

Gary Well Gary, I'm hoping I didn't take your comment wrong, but I thought I did give the guy a whole lot of credit by saying things like: it may work as the guy designed it, it looks very ingenious, nice machining, and I'm sure it works great. Plus I said I like the brake lever also. Your comment made me feel like I kicked the guy in the arse or something. The only negative I mentioned was he needs to add a small guard, (which is most likely in the making just not in his picture yet), and that is why I said: Its a project still in works, Oh and from an engineers point of view, you are correct, for I too noticed the angle of the cable coming out of the sheath at my first glance of the photo, but I forgot to mention it. It would surely wear out fast at that angle.

ACE50 Posted May 7, 2014 #7 Posted May 7, 2014 I like it, cause it is different. I've been toying with the idea of floorboard's that's also the shifter and brake. Also integrating switches into the grips. I've done that before and it worked great. And a few other things. Now to just build a bike with all of it!

djh3 Posted May 7, 2014 #9 Posted May 7, 2014 Chances are its on one of them bar hopper, no suspension aint it purty to look at bikes anyways like on OCC. You know kind of like the custom cars they use to make monogram model cars for when we were kids. Pretty to look at but non-functional.

Though for him to have gone through the work of making this, I would think he would like to have it visable, along line of your clear cover comment. Gary
Flyinfool Posted May 7, 2014 #11 Posted May 7, 2014 I think it could look real cool once it is all cleaned up and polished. Its hard to know. Maybe the intent was to have all cables hidden under a cover that will cover the entire unpainted handle bar. Would be a very clean look. On another note, I'll bet that brass grip really sucks the heat out of your hand on a cold day.
