Started the bike after a lot of work.. Still more to do, but I wanted to start it..

I did:

Valve shims

Carb rebuild

Starter rebuild

New thermostat...

Here's what happened. I spun the engine over, no start, just listening.. Sounded good. Spun faster than when I got the bike.

Open fuel valve, primed engine and it started.. Sounded rough, but figured it was gonna be like that until fuel levels got stable. Shut the engine off to put the right muffler back on.

Tried to restart and a very audible clacking sound was coming from somewhere.. The bike did not start because I stopped trying. I got scared at what I was hearing.

Turned the engine over by hand, nothing binding or grinding..

My first thoughts were:

Valve shim came loose

Something got into the cylinder during maintenance

Starter clutch

Someone give me some advice on where I should start.. I'm demoralized and am looking for guidance..

"Clacking" sound is starter clutch disengaging as a result of most likely a weak battery charge level. Clutch gets thrown into release because starter can't overcome compression.

Are you saying that so long as the starter is engaged it makes that sound? The engine turned over pretty well during the start... although the sg of the battery is a little low..

I didn't ask enough with my last post...

Could I put a battery charger on with a start assist to overcome any issues with the weak battery and doing that MIGHT stop the clutch from clacking?

You are best to just fully charge the battery. Most boosters supply a higher voltage that can damage the regulator on the bike.

When the start clutch goes it sounds like someone is inside of the motor with a hammer trying to get out.

Woohoo....:cool10:

I charged the battery and left it on a 10 amp charge rate and the bike turned over without the clanging.. THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED

The bike ran real rough, but I immediately determined that the2 right exhausts were only warm...

I found that I had plugged the two right coils wrong.. Unplugged, switched and BAM the bike ran much smoother..

I have to solve the antifreeze pissing out of a connection. I think the pressed in pipe the tube clamps to has corroded and will now have to be replaced..

But, the starting clanking is solved so for now alls well...
