syscrusher Posted April 26, 2014 #1 Posted April 26, 2014 The plastics on the front below the cowling on my 1993 spread out pretty wide making it a little uncomfortable to get my feet on the forward pegs. My calf sort of rubs on the edge of those side covers and I have to spread my legs out wide to get around those covers. I notice that not all of the covers are built the same and I would like to start looking for some that are a little more streamlined. Which ones might fit on a 1993? Any advice on re-working the ones I have?
Prairiehammer Posted April 26, 2014 #2 Posted April 26, 2014 (edited) I am not certain what 'plastics' you are referring to. Are you speaking of the 'lowers' that contain the 'knee vents' and act to protect your shins from the rain and wind? (Items #1 and #18). All the First Gen 'lowers' are the same. I'd be interested in seeing those that are different. If you are speaking of the lower fairing (lowers), some people, including myself, have removed them to allow clearance for our legs when using engine mounted highway pegs. Irrespective of what plastics you are referring to, all the plastic from the seat forward is interchangeable regardless of First Gen year. http://cdn.boats.net/diagram/yamaha/02/0290/0045.png Edited April 26, 2014 by Prairiehammer
bongobobny Posted April 26, 2014 #3 Posted April 26, 2014 Item 35 - 40 do not appear on the MK1, only the MK2. There is a difference in the engine covers for MK1 vs MK2, and the '83 mounts different from the '84. Saddlebags mount different on MK1 vs MK2. Trunk is smaller on '83 and '84. Other than that any year will fit any year...
syscrusher Posted April 26, 2014 Author #4 Posted April 26, 2014 I was thinking of the "knee vents". I thought I had seen some that were more streamlined like Dingy's, but I realize that his is heavily customized. It's good to know that any year will do. I may try finding a set that I can experiment with in thinning down the bottom section. They kind of don't protrude enough to protect really well but enough to be uncomfortable when pressed against.
hushpuppy Posted May 1, 2014 #5 Posted May 1, 2014 I have an 89 VR in blue. Does anyone know what the ID number of the lighter blue color is, or the name of the color? Thanks in advance. Richard

The side covers have been cut back as seen in 1st picture. 2nd picture is of Tweety's side covers before I got serious about customizing it. This does allow more heat to come back on legs though. Rest of plastic on bike is MKI, basically unmodified. Gary
Venturous Randy Posted May 1, 2014 #7 Posted May 1, 2014 I did my side panels many years ago and have enjoyed it very much. Being inseam challenged, it really helped me in using my highway pegs without the lower faring hitting me on the inside of my leg. As far as heat, I ride in shorts most of the time and I have never felt that heat was a problem. RandyA
