Fannydunk Posted April 14, 2014 #1 Posted April 14, 2014 My starter to dragging and sometimes it will start, but most times not. What is the path of least resistance to removing the starter. My manual shows removing it after the engine is out.
mm482 Posted April 14, 2014 #2 Posted April 14, 2014 I hope this will help. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=80775 Earl
Flyinfool Posted April 14, 2014 #3 Posted April 14, 2014 That procedure does help. I was able to get it all done without aking the radiator all the way out, but I did have to take out all of its mounting bolts so it could move around a little. The thermostat housing did have to come out. I would not reuse any of the o rings. they are all old and hard and new ones are cheap. If your starter is dragging or slipping it is more likely the starter clutch that is accessed from the left engine cover. What exactly is your starter doing?
Fannydunk Posted April 15, 2014 Author #4 Posted April 15, 2014 For the last few years, it spins fast when cold, and then real slow when hot. My local shop tells me it is the ground plate on the brushes.
KIC Posted April 15, 2014 #5 Posted April 15, 2014 I am ready to do the same on my 89. Thanks for posting the write up and thanks to CABRECO for taking the time to do the right up !
Yammer Dan Posted April 15, 2014 #6 Posted April 15, 2014 A Glass Matt battery will cure a lot of this. I had one that didn't like to crank. Bigger cables and AGM battery and its still cranking on same old starter! Whirling like a new one. You just gotta get the juice to them.
mother Posted April 15, 2014 #7 Posted April 15, 2014 like Dan said, good wires , good battery and when i installed a 2nd gen starter which is a 4 brush starter absolutely cured my hot start problem i have had for years with the old two brush starter. did mine with engine in
Squidley Posted April 16, 2014 #8 Posted April 16, 2014 I have owned and modified several 1st gens with the hot slow start issue. The #1 thing that I did was on my '86 that I still have and that was put a 2nd gen starter on it. I have the stock size cables on it and a Deka battery and it spins it just as fast hot as it does cold....
