Trader Posted April 14, 2014 #1 Posted April 14, 2014 (edited) I put the bike on a charger the other day and it fired right up. Not bad after being outside with only a rain cover on it all winter. (I know....I'm so ashamed!) My garage was so full of crap and corruption I couldn't get the bike in there and still be able to move. Today I finally got to go for a short ride:cool10: and my 87 (with 75,000 miles) thinks it's a Mark I !!!!! I warmed it up well, and took it easy for the first 10 miles or so and all was fine. I should have changed the clutch over the winter but got in the way. I wanted to see how bad it was. Sure enough, when I really got it on it started to slip. But even worse....it jumped out of 2nd gear...I slowed down and tried it again and it jumped out again! Only when I was really pouring it on. What could have changed over the winter????? bongobobny Posted April 15, 2014 #2 Posted April 15, 2014 The split washer that is to blame just happened to go bad in coincidence with spring!!
Trader Posted April 15, 2014 Author #4 Posted April 15, 2014 87 shouldn't be doing that?? THATS WHAT I THOUGHT!!!!! it's an 87!!! These don't have 2nd gear issues.
Rosie1965 Posted April 15, 2014 #5 Posted April 15, 2014 Maybe linkage got a little rusty being outside and it's not completely engaging into 2nd gear?
Marcarl Posted April 15, 2014 #6 Posted April 15, 2014 Not hard to see if it's a traditional issue,,, remove the middle gear cover and you can view the split washer right there in the open,,,almost. If it's wore down in the center, then Houston, you have problem,,, if not, your problem is elsewhere.
