dharnie Posted March 6, 2008 #1 Posted March 6, 2008 Does anyone know anything about installing these? If you do, why do the 4 threaded holes (female) on the light mounting bar for the wind deflectors not take the stock screws that I took off the original Yamaha Venture light bar? I tried to tighten with my fingers before I put a tool on all 4 bolts in all the 4 mounting holes and they would not thread. Any ideas? The lamps are stamped made in USA so I'm thinking maybe they are SAE and not metric?
BradT Posted March 6, 2008 #2 Posted March 6, 2008 If you took the screws of the bike, would they not be Metric. ? I do know it was a pain to put those screws in. They are on a funny angle, and the threads and the bolt did not seem like a nice fit. Brad
dharnie Posted March 6, 2008 Author #3 Posted March 6, 2008 yeah the ones that came off are metric screws of course BUT are the threads in the bar metric???? why don't they screw in? I already have the bar on the bike and forget about taking the danged thing off because it took me 2 eves to get it on - what a royal pain!!! I had to bend the allen wrench so it would go under the fairing so I could tighten the bar mount bolts!! Forget about taking the fairing on or off without screwing around with that terribly designed passing lamps contraption!! They look great and I hope that they perform as expected - but what a terrible design for installing AND adjusting the lamps and the directionals. I would have done better if I did not read the terrible instructions. DO NOT put the lamps on BEFORE you put the bar on!! It just makes the whole thing heavier and you have to take the lamps off anyway to get the fairing back on. Also use double sided tape to stick the spacers on or else you need 2 more hands!!!
bokeifus Posted March 6, 2008 #4 Posted March 6, 2008 If its the same thing I ran into, heres what I figured out. Some realy smart guy made the pieces, drilled and tapped the holes, then decided to chrome it. I had to retap the holes, to get the chrome out of the screw holes to make it work:mad:.
BigShell Posted March 7, 2008 #5 Posted March 7, 2008 I had to bend the allen wrench so it would go under the fairing so I could tighten the bar mount bolts!! Can't speak to the wind deflector screw problem. Mine went right in. As far as the "bending" an allen wrench... that's why they make ball-end wrenches. They will work at an angle. I think the design is poor too. There is a member here who sells a bracket that pushes the lights out and away from the fairing so you can clean better and also split the fairing without removing the passing lights. Something like that should have been designed in.

The instructions are not the best but they do say to reinstall the fairing cover before bolting the passing lamp assembly onto the bike. That way the lamps themselves can be installed on the bar before bolting the assembly to the bike. Use the deflector mounting screws to determine what size tap is needed and run it into the holes on the light bar to clean out any excess chrome, then the screws should go right in. Don't forget to use some loctite on the screws.-Jack
dharnie Posted March 7, 2008 Author #7 Posted March 7, 2008 Thanks for all the input here. The inner fairing was in the way and hitting female end of my allen wrench socket and swivel joint for my drive was out in front of the fairing - - - so that did NOT work. And I also DID follow instructions and the outer fairing is even lower than the inner and it was worse trying to tighten the allen head bolts. The instructions should be written to put the assembly together and leave the nacelle dangling withOUT the bulbs in. It is lighter and less chance of dropping and shattering the bulbs. The bulbs have to be taken out anyway to adjust for the desired angle/alignment. I will be buying a tap this Sat! Thanks for that info!
V7Goose Posted March 7, 2008 #8 Posted March 7, 2008 Other than being extremely difficult to get a wrench on them, my stock screws fit the new bar just fine. Goose
spotsy Posted March 8, 2008 #9 Posted March 8, 2008 Like someone said, get a set of allen wrenches with the ball on them. This isn't the only place you'll need them. The other thing, there is a guy that was making a bracket that would install to the bike and then the lights to the bracket. I believe they were $25 shipped. It allows you to remove the fairing without removing the lightbar. Do a search on lightbar and you should find it. If not, make one and paint it silver because it's fairly hidden. If I remember, I had to buy new bolts. Hope it helps. Spotsy
DavidD Posted March 9, 2008 #10 Posted March 9, 2008 I agree, they are a bit hard to get to but had no fit-up problems.
