KIC Posted April 10, 2014 #1 Posted April 10, 2014 I know that you can buy 7MM solid wire copper spark plug wire in bulk. Does anybody know how many feet I need to buy to replace my wires on my 89 ? I would like to buy it before I take my bike apart.
bongobobny Posted April 11, 2014 #2 Posted April 11, 2014 10 feet should do you, but to play it safe buy an extra foot or two. That's 3 ft each for the rear plugs and 2 ft for the front...
wrenchrob Posted April 11, 2014 #3 Posted April 11, 2014 2 feet should get you there. 1left foot and 1right foot!
cimmer Posted April 11, 2014 #4 Posted April 11, 2014 If I recall, I used a total of 8 feet for my 89 a few years ago.. Hope that helps. Rick F.
KIC Posted April 11, 2014 Author #5 Posted April 11, 2014 2 feet should get you there. 1left foot and 1right foot! Thanks ..your the only one who answered my question...the other two misunderstood the question.... lol... Thanks for the info guys.. I appreciate it ...
KIC Posted April 11, 2014 Author #7 Posted April 11, 2014 I am having trouble finding it by the foot. I did find one place that had 7MM solid tin/metalic by the foot, but not solid copper. Still searching...trying the specialty hot rod shops now...
cimmer Posted April 11, 2014 #8 Posted April 11, 2014 I ordered mine from Dennis Kirk along with new NGK caps also. I believe they sell it in 6' rolls. Also check your local M/C shops as they might sell it by the foot also.. Rick F.
KIC Posted April 11, 2014 Author #9 Posted April 11, 2014 The bike shops, so far, just want to sell a kit for around $40.00. The wire should sell for 69-cents a foot. One guy told me they quit selling solid core copper because it was interfering with aircraft "signals/communication". Although a 1st Gen is fast, I don't think it can take down an airliner.... So I take it that 7MM solid Copper wire is the only wire to use on a 1st Gen ?
cimmer Posted April 11, 2014 #10 Posted April 11, 2014 Here is the wire I used: https://www.denniskirk.com/parts-unlimited/spark-plug-wire.p2021.prd/2021.sku It is stranded copper wire and is from Parts Unlimited and sold in 6' packages. This might be orderable from any place that sells Parts Unlimited items. If not, you can order it from Dennis Kirk. I also replaced the spark plug caps with NGK units. Here is a link to those: https://www.denniskirk.com/search/ngk+spark+plug+cap.q/40.ipp I used a combination of different angeled on to work on my 89. Hope this helps. Rick F.
Yammer Dan Posted April 11, 2014 #11 Posted April 11, 2014 http://www.parkeryamaha.com/sparkplugwire7mm.aspx This is what I used last time. Never looked for solid copper and looks like I paid too much.
Black wing Posted April 12, 2014 #12 Posted April 12, 2014 i just use any regular 7mm copper core wire i can get from the local bike shops, works fine never really bothered to hunt down solid core as the stranded stuff seems to work just fine

KIC Posted April 13, 2014 Author #14 Posted April 13, 2014 I have tried NAPA, and all the Hot Rod stores. Guess I am ordering on line.
dna9656 Posted April 13, 2014 #15 Posted April 13, 2014 I have tried NAPA, and all the Hot Rod stores. Guess I am ordering on line. I bought the generic spark plug wire, the filament style, probably 5 or 5 MM. NOT what you're looking for... Sometimes NAPA has RACE stuff, you may have to ask for it. You can also get a set for a car and cut them to fit, Accel used to have a kit with 8 same length pcs. You crimped the ends on after you cut to fit; a solution I was considering... I used the cheapie stuff to get the bike operational, THEN I will get the up-graded stuff. I have attempted to bring vehicles back to life before and used top shelf parts only later to find something that forced the abandonment of the project. I found out when selling failed projects for parts or scrapping them the buyers do not care that it has 24K solid gold repair parts on it. You still get zip for you scrap.

Also, I recall reading that a wire kit for a V-8 can be had for less than one for a V-4. Haven't looked into it yet but that job is on the list after rebuilding the exhaust and replacing the rear tire. You can be the Guinea pig aka R&R guru. Pretty sure I read the info on this forum so there is most likely someone on here that actually knows what he is talking about. Gary perhaps?
