83 Venture,

I tried asking a more detailed question yesterday with few results.. So, I'm gonna try this request:

If you have a starter disassembled laying around... PLEASE measure the bore where the oil seal sits This is the seal next to the needle bearing. I expect that the answer will be 25mm.. or something like 24.8mm.. I need to know what other people are measuring..

Even better.. if the seal is still inserted, what are the numbers on it..

Thanks,

Don

AND tell me what bike you have..

OK, I will try again.

1st picture is of seal end of starter from an 83-85 starter. Not sure which, just a spare I had from a parts bike.

2nd picture is from a 97 RSTD 4 brush.

There is no visible seal # on the MKI. The RSTD seal # is NOK AC0587F

Shaft dia on both is 0.590"

As close as I can tell seal bore ID is the same on both, but I can't get a good measurement with seal in bore. Looks to be 0.984" ID. I am not going to pull seal as it would destroy it.

Needle bearing is different visually, cage is different, looks like 4 brush has 1 more needle in bearing.

What brand is your rebuild kit? There have been a few complaints about an Ebay kit, the brushes wore out within a year.

For a point of reference, the 4 brush I opened up to get picture just arrived today. Paid $25.00 for it including shipping. That being typed, you are better of replacing starter than rebuilding it.

While you are in there, might as well take a look at thread linked below. It will cure your starter related cranking issues.

Good info. thanks.. These are the results I was expecting... $25 WOW, thats a great price for a 4 brush. I'm already into the job of rebuilding it so I guess I'll keep going. I'll admit I didn't research if people had good results with a rebuild kit. The parts all seem fine, except they sent me the wrong oil seal.

I finished the grounding job just the other day. I'm sure it will work better. But, as I only started it a few times before tearing into the entire bike for repairs I'm not sure what to expect when I do get it back together. The sealed bearing in the starter was far from smooth. I was glad it hadn't locked up on me, it was that bad. Anyway, I now have some ammo. for the supplier of the rebuild kit to confirm to them they sent me the wrong oil seal. Their looking into getting me the right seal.

Thanks for the measurements..

I know there are other threads about the 4 brush starter, but what years doe s the 4-brush start ? Are there any years that would not fit in an 89 Venture ? I want to start searching as mine is slowing getting to the point where the bike wont start when hot.

LOVE my 4 brush starter. Wish I had done that the first time instead of trying to make my 2 brush work better.

:sign yeah that: Altho I do have a thicker gauge wire running to & from the battery now, but I would have saved so many dis-assembles & re-assembles of the headers, radiator, & thermostat housing, plus coolant draining and refilling each time I had to muck around with pulling the starter. Now I just gotta install the Dano starter clutch I received a few weeks ago.

I think you are pretty safe with any second generation starter. Plenty of threads on here on the subject, including identification.

I've only been through the whole tear down 3 times, but that's 2 more times than I should have. I just installed the heavier wires yesterday, haven't got things back together yet. I really like the Dano starter clutch, someday will probably have one.
