Groatski Posted April 7, 2014 #1 Posted April 7, 2014 Hello all, this is my first post. I have a 2000 Venture that I inherited off my father, and like an idiot I stored it 2 winters ago without draining the fuel out of the carbs. It would run only on full choke and would die the moment I applied throttle. I completely dismantled the carbs, soaked and cleaned every part and blew out every hole. When I put it all back together it fired up instantly and ran like a dream - for about 2 weeks. Then it started running just like it did before. Since it was nearing the end of the riding season I drained the carbs and put it off till this year. I ordered four new idle jets. When I took the carbs apart again I noticed all the old idle jets were blocked, so I replaced them and reassembled the bike. It fired up and idled like a champ, but as soon as I started applying throttle it would die. I could gently coax the RPMs up higher and higher, so I figured a quick road test would blow out whatever was fouling it up. I was able to get it up to freeway speeds but could tell it was way low on power, and when I stopped at a light it was a struggle to get it off the line without stalling. When I reefed the throttle the engine would instantly die. I got back home, tore it all apart again and sprayed Gumout thru all the passages I could find - they were all clear. I just fired it up again and nothing has changed, so I'm out of ideas. Is there some sort of critical passage or jet on these things that I'm leaving out? The idle and main jets are clear. Can someone direct me to what I could try next? Sorry this is so long winded. Hoping to hear from some of you soon, I don't want to miss out on another riding season. -Dave Groat-
Phoneman1981 Posted April 7, 2014 #2 Posted April 7, 2014 Hello David: Welcome to the site. You came to the right place. Many knowledgeable members here to help. Have you replaced the fuel filter located under the seat? I am sure others will chime in.
Yammer Dan Posted April 7, 2014 #3 Posted April 7, 2014 Sea-Foam. A little late now but go to Wally World and get 2 cans of Berryman's Chem Tech. Add whole can to less than 1/8 tank of gas and run it til it is in carbs good. Leave sit at least overnight. Then run til you have to fill up and add another can with fillup. After you get it running right give it a few ozs of Sea-Foam every other tank or so.
Wade 2000 Posted April 7, 2014 #7 Posted April 7, 2014 Yes check fuel filter and you may have just gotten some bad gas. I have had the same symptoms with bad gas especially when I was trying to run High Test, some stations rarely sell this grade so you get very poor grade. This said I would drain the gas, replace the filter, and sea foam treat it with a healthy dose. Let us know how it goes.
Cougar Posted April 7, 2014 #8 Posted April 7, 2014 I have a 2000 Venture and when I got it , the inside of the tank was very rusty as it sat for 2 years in a barn. take a flashlight and look inside that tank good. was clogging the fuel filter real bad, had to re-seal the tank. just a thought. sea foam could not help that good luck ! spike13 Posted April 7, 2014 #9 Posted April 7, 2014 i have an atv that was doing the same thing would idle fine but the second i hit the throttle it would die turned out to be a broken vacuum line
Groatski Posted April 7, 2014 Author #10 Posted April 7, 2014 Thank you everyone, Firstly, Spike13, do the Venture carbs have a vacuum line? Where does it attach? Secondly, I ordered a new fuel filter (apparently replacing it is an operation in itself). When it comes in I'll get a few cans of that Pennzoil SeaFoam and replace the gas in the tanks, after inspecting the tank's interior. I think that will cover the bases. Probably won't be getting to it till later this week, but I'll keep everyone informed. --Dave Groat--
Groatski Posted April 7, 2014 Author #11 Posted April 7, 2014 Thank you everyone, Firstly, Spike13, do the Venture carbs have a vacuum line? Where does it attach? Secondly, Marcarl, where are these air mixture screws? There's a lot of stuff on these carbs and I'm not entirely sure what every part does yet. Thirdly, I ordered a new fuel filter (apparently replacing it is an operation in itself). When it comes in I'll get a few cans of that Pennzoil SeaFoam and replace the gas in the tanks, after inspecting the tank's interior. I think that will cover the bases.
