On the big plug at the TCI all wires except the black has 11.2 volts with key on. I thought the black was a ground If not whats it for?

Yes on the bigger plug with key on and engine NOT rotating you will have battery voltage on 5 of the wires

4 wires are from the coils (Orange, Yellow, Gray, White)

1 is power supply to TCI (Red/Black)

 

The TCI ground is the Black on the larger plug. You should be able to test all 5 wires

above versus that Black and get your readings....if the black is not grounding the TCI

will not operate.

 

The black on the smaller plug is only for pickup coil.

update: Mxvet tried his good VMax TCI and now gets more regular sparks, but some

pauses.

 

Even though the pickup coils are the same, Venture and VMax rotors are different and of course TCI.

 

Does it sound reasonable that the signals the Venture rotor is sending to the VMax TCI

aren't right so the VMax TCI is shutting down then detecting rotation and restarting again.

Has anyone tried this combo before with same results?

I'd be willing to bet that the only difference between the V-Max TCI and the Venture TCI is the advance curve. If the V-Max TCI is known good I'd be looking for other issues.

VMax & Venture TCI's will interchange. 83~89 Venture's with 85~89 VMax's and 90~93 Venture's with 90~07 VMax's

 

There is nothing in VMax TCI different from a Venture, other than the RPM/Vacuum advance curve.

 

Did you change the pickup coil. I helped a guy in Thailand a few weeks ago that had a new Ignitech that would not start. Ended up being a bad pickup coil on a 91 VMax. Coil may be going bad on yours.

what about the rotor differences?

 

The VMax rotor was lightened in order to help acceleration.

 

The Ignitech TCI's that I sell are set up identically on VMax & Ventures, with the exception of timing/vacuum curves. They have to be same rotor or Ignitech wouldn't work on both with same programing.

Ok as Neil said I took the TCI off my running vmax and it would get spark to all four cylinders in cycles. Holding in on starter button it would spark for second then none for a second for as long as I held starter button just back n forth uniformly. A few days later I discovered I had unhooked the preasure switch to get the stock TCI out. So it wasn't hooked up when I was testing vmax TCI. Could that have caused it to spark like that? Also the black ground wire at the big TCI plug has good ground 0 ohms when key is off when key on has 20 ohms is this normal?

Resistance readings need to be performed on wiring with no current flow (dead).

The meter sends a small current down the circuit between the probes to determine resistance.

After trying vmax TCI wich changed how it sparked in cycles. I took pick up coil off spare vmax motor I have. Same result but I discovered two of the raised squares on flywheel that pick up coil reads was covered with rust from sitting for years I guess. I cleaned them up hoping that was the problem but got same result. But this was with venture TCI. I had already taken vmax TCI out and reinstalled it in vmax. I know I should just take vmax TCI back out and try it but it was a pain in the ass to get out. Im thinking the reason the vmax TCI was firing in cycles was from the rust on the flywheel squares? If this makes since I would like to buy the aftermarket TCI from Gary my email was on earlier post. Thanks

Would like to thank everyone who helped me out getting this 92 venture back on the road. I purchased the aftermarket TCI from Dingey that fixed it.
